Background

Initially referred to as the ‘Rhino’ during development, the Ramcharger is a large sport utility vehicle produced by Dodge from 1974 to 1993. The car rode upon a shorter wheelbase version of the Dodge D Series/Ram Pickup truck chassis. The car was sold in Mexico until 1996, and was ultimately brought back for a final production run that only lasted from 1999 to 2001.

Overview

The Ramcharger was produced primarily as a two-door, 4x4 vehicle meant to compete against the K5 Blazer and Ford Bronco. In 1981, the car underwent a refresh, marking the second generation of the car which lasted until 1993. Not much changed mechanically, and design-wise, the only major shift was the change from an egg crate-style grille to the crosshair design that many Dodges still use today. This specific Ramcharger has a 318 cubic inch, 5.2L V8 engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission.

Exterior

The Ramcharger’s Dover Gray paint is in great condition; however, there are some inconsistencies around the outside. The passenger side front quarter panel has two holes next to the ‘Ramcharger’ text that suggest a piece is missing, likely the leaping Ram logo that can be found on the opposite side. Moving further down the passenger side of the car, several empty bolt holes can be seen at the bottom of the passenger door. The trim is missing there but is present on the opposite side of the car. Moving to the driver’s side of the car, it appears as though the rear quarter panel has two small dents in it. These dents do not appear to have damaged the paint in any way though. The new wheels would benefit greatly from a power washing, but the Hankook DynaPro MT tires give the car a fantastic, aggressive look and have plenty of tread left to go.

Interior

The gray interior is not as nice as the exterior. The gray carpets have been abused but there are no holes or tears to be seen. This suggests that deep, deep cleaning might be able to get them back in good shape. The same cannot be said about the driver’s seat. The stitching appears to have failed, completely exposing the foam underneath. The center of the steering wheel could use some scrubbing, but the rim itself is likely in good shape thanks to the cover the owner wrapped around it. All of the gauges are clean and easy to read. There are some scratches in the dash pad above the glovebox, but they are minor at best.

Mechanical

The seller describes the car as rust free, and while we do think the undercarriage needs a strong power-wash, there appears to be no major damage hiding underneath the car. This trend continues under the hood, where things are dirty, but nothing appears to be actively decaying.

History

The car was purchased brand new in 1990 at Covington Pike in Memphis, Tennessee. 32 years later, the car has 119,906 miles on the clock. Work has been done on the vehicle, with the seller noting that the car has received new paint, wheels, and tires.

Summary

This Ramcharger is unbelievably cool. Built specifically to put the Ford Bronco to shame, this Dodge can do it all. This car is a perfect candidate for a full restoration, or good to go as a daily driver. It would also make an excellent first car for new drivers that would be cheap to maintain. The Ramcharger is loaded with attitude, and that may not work for everyone, but those who love it… love it.

The Market by Bonhams is excited to offer this Dodge Ramcharger for online auction with no reserve with an estimate of $12,000-$18,000.
