Background
The Daimler Company, despite a very German sounding name, has been a British company since its late 19th century inception. Originally founded to produce licensed versions of Gottlieb Daimler’s pioneering engines and automobiles in Coventry, the company and its products were enthusiastically embraced by a car hungry public, quickly leading to all-new, entirely domestically designed machines.
From 1960 until 2007 Daimlers were essentially upmarket Jaguars, in some cases retaining Daimler designed engines such as the fascinating 2.5 liter hemispherical head V8 fitted to the Daimler 250, itself heavily based on Jaguar’s S-type.
Another car to feature the little jewel of a hemi was Daimler’s very last independently developed model, the unlikely-but-fabulous fiberglass bodied SP250 roadster of 1959-1964.
