Background

Harley Earl was a visionary genius, and he lit the way for an entire industry as director of GM’s pioneering Art & Colour design studio from 1927 to 1958. It’s difficult to overstate Earl’s contributions to history–the man virtually invented automotive styling, the concept car, tail fins, and annual model year changes, to name just a few.

He could also spot a trend, like the flood of foreign sports cars being imported by returning WW2 veterans in the late 1940s. Inspired to field an American competitor to these glamorous new Europeans, Earl designed the EX-122 prototype. Low, lightweight, basic, and beautiful, the car was such a hit that it entered production just six months later as the 1953 Corvette.

Overview

The auction car is from the final year of C1 production, and this means it also represents the final year of exposed headlights for the next five generations and 40+ years of Corvette history. Its solid axle would never return.

A base 250 hp, 327ci V8 model with a Powerglide automatic transmission and optional Positraction 3.36:1 rear end, this car was built in St. Louis, Missouri and includes the correct auxiliary hardtop.

Exterior

Honduras maroon paint is a respray of an original 1962 factory color, and the car’s black convertible top and chrome brightwork are also reported to have been refreshed.

Wheel covers, badging, trim, and other exterior accessories appear to be fully accounted for and correct.

Many C1 Corvettes have white painted side scallops, though this all-red theme arguably lends the car a sportier, more focused look. Exterior trunk lids would disappear entirely with 1963’s C2 Sting Ray, returning only with the C5 convertible some 35 years later (though a glass hatchback was first seen near the end of C3 production in 1983). Round tail lights would be another long-lived Corvette calling card, and were finally retired with the C7 of 2014.

Interior

Inside, the car has also been refreshed with new upholstery. 1962 was not only the final model year for C1 production, it was also the first in which heaters were fitted as standard (despite the fact that all 300, first-year 1953’s were thus equipped).

Note the elaborate, sculptural dashboard, as well as the centrally-mounted clock and auto-seeking AM Wonderbar radio.

Mechanical

This car is equipped with the base 327/250 engine, so-called for its 327 cubic inch displacement and 250 hp factory rating. Power is shuffled rearwards via a Powerglide automatic transmission before splitting off 90 degrees in either direction from a 3.36:1 geared, Positraction equipped differential.

History

The car is sold with limited historical documentation.

Summary

C1 Corvettes debuted with a 150 hp straight-six, a 2-speed automatic transmission, and just two headlights. By the model’s final year in 1962, even base cars made 100 additional ponies, and sales had increased by nearly 5,000 percent, establishing the ‘Vette as the greatest and longest-lived icon of the American sports car industry.

As a final year example with ideal cruiser spec, the auction car is certainly worth consideration.

Estimated $30,000 - $50,000
