If you wanted to arrive in style, the Eldorado was Cadillac's flamboyant answer to that requirement. For the 1976 model year, the car still had the larger of the V8 engines, but with a front-wheel-drive architecture. The brand's preference was clear: luxury and style over outright performance. It might have been a heavy car, but it wasn't without a purpose. With 1976 being the last year of the Eldorado Convertible, it made the car even more special. The ninth-generation Eldorado was on sale for another two years and now, nearly five decades later, those who like classics understand the momentous car even better.

Overview

Featured here is a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible. As stately as the Eldorado Convertible has always been, this one needs some attention — there's minor damage on the outside. The interior also shows off the high-tech features of the car including onboard climate control, cruise control, central locking, power windows, electrically adjustable seats, radio, etc. Also included with the car is some paperwork. About 14,000 examples of the Eldorado Convertible were made.

Exterior

With the ninth-generation Eldorado, it was evident, the increment in size. Matching four-door sedans in footprint, this two-door luxury car didn't transform from the preceding model in terms of the overall design. The mid-life update that the car got in the mid-70s brought a slightly different look to the front and rear. It's said that there were 21 colors to choose from for the exterior and seven for the roof. The foldable roof can be operated with the help of buttons, and it tucks in behind the rear seat.

Interior

While it's hard to ignore the Eldorado Convertible's presence on the outside, it's the interior that further shows Cadillac's focus on making it a luxury car. Apart from the aforementioned features, it had enough space for five adults, the front seats would recline forward to allow access to the rear bench, and the use of a mix of materials (wood, leather, and plastic) made the cabin look and feel modern.

Mechanical

This 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible has a front-wheel-drive platform underneath (like the immediately preceding generation), a variable-ratio power steering, and a 500 cubic-inch V8. The engine was soon replaced by a smaller unit but not on the 1976 convertible. The 8.2-liter V8 engine made 210+ hp, good enough to propel the heavy car steadily to a top speed of 115 mph. The odometer on this example reads 21k+ miles.

History

The ninth-generation Eldorado was available from 1971 to 1978 and the Eldorado Convertible was discontinued after the 1976 model. Truly a one of a kind car, especially given that the succeeding generations didn't get a variant like this, it was also a sales success, with about 14,000 units sold. Odometer shows 21,409 miles.

Summary

'They don't make ‘em like they used to' - that's particularly true for the Cadillac Eldorado Convertible. The featured example here might need tiny bits of TLC but it seems to have the potential to be a true classic. Check out the detailed photo gallery below.

Estimated $4,000 - $9,000.

PLEASE NOTE: The vehicles from this collection have been sitting for a number of years. Mechanical and running condition of each lot is unknown, and they are being sold 'as is'. This vehicle is being sold on Bill of Sale only.
