Fraser's review

Fraser Jackson - Consignment Specialist Message Fraser

“ Is this the last of the mighty M5's, with its glorious-sounding V8?? This even has the M Driver Pack. ”

This five-seat saloon can launch itself at the horizon at the rate of 211mph and is capable of lapping the Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 35 seconds.

Background

The BMW M5 F90, which first saw the light of day in 2017, is infamous as the first M5 to ditch rear-wheel drive in favour of sending the vehicle’s  considerable power to all four wheels instead.

Fear not though because disabling the electronic stability control allows it to be configured to send the V8’s power to the rear axle, a feature that helped it win not one, but two world records for drifting.

The Competition you see here raises that still further, offering an official 617bhp and 553lb.ft of torque, allowing it to reach 62mph in a mind-boggling 3.1 seconds – and a test by Car and Driver magazine actually showed that was the figure at the wheels, which suggests there was considerably more at the flywheel…

And the madness doesn’t end there because if you wrote a cheque for the optional Driver Pack like this owner did, and the speedometer won’t stop moving until you’re covering the ground at 85 metres per second, or 190mph.

However, as America is discovering, power without control can be a scary thing so BMW stiffened and lowered the springs, dialled in a tad more front camber, and fitted different wheels.

Quite probably the last of the Mighty M5s, this might be your last chance to buy a performance BMW that sounds every bit as good as it goes.

Overview

Finished in Donington Grey with a Black Merino leather interior, ‘YH19 NVZ’

is a BMW M5 Competition that comes with a peerless service history and the desirable M Driver Pack that lifts the car’s top speed to 190mph.

Except this one will top even that thanks to a remap by DMS of Southampton, a firm whose Stage 1+ Package raises the power to a staggering 760bhp and torque to 690lb.ft, enough to lift the top speed to a ludicrous 211mph.

You’ll pass 60mph in 2.8 seconds too, and top three figures in just 6.3 while still retaining every single iota of civility BMW carefully engineered in. Unsurprisingly, the seller is clear it was worth every penny of the £1,980 it set him back in November 2020.

He splashed out for the BMW carbonfibre kit too, and since he’s owned it for more than six years these modifications have had plenty of time to bed in and prove their worth.

Exterior

The combination of the Donington Grey paint, tinted rear windows, and the  carefully considered carbonfibre aerodynamic aids makes for an understated yet purposeful saloon; if you didn’t know better, you’d think it was merely an unusually discreet example of a standard family car.

Until you notice the wheels: a full 20-inches in diameter and immaculately presented, their open design allows you to admire the gold M brake calipers that bite down on carbon ceramic brake discs with the ferocity of a great white. If we’re being hyper-critical then some of the centre caps have almost imperceptible blemishes, but then the tyre valve caps are M Sport jobbies, so #swingsandroundabouts

Tyres are a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and ya’ll know how we feel about this sort of thing by now. With 285/35ZR20 on the rear and a slightly more modest 275/35ZR20 on the front, the former were made in 2023 with the latter having been made in 2025. All have good tread and no obvious damage, including to the sidewalls.

Moving onto an assessment of the coachwork, it sits with a perfect stance and the shutlines are so tight and consistent they could have been drawn on with a Sharpie – and a fine-tipped one at that. The panel alignment is also excellent, and there are no dents, dinks, or ripples to distract the eye.

Obviously, the lamp lenses are unblemished, the badges are still bright and colourful, and the apertures are clean, including underneath the area beneath the fuel filler flap.

The rear diffuser provides a suitably menacing backdrop for the quadruple exhaust tailpipes, while the badge on the boot lid lets other drivers know they’ve been overtaken by a modern-day legend.

And just look at that carbonfibre roof…

The Certificate of Repair in the history file confirms that the installation of the BMW accessory carbonfibre kit in December 2021 by North Oxford Garage, the main agent who has looked after the car since it was new, is guaranteed for life and is underpinned by BMW’s standard anti-corrosion warranty.

Flaws and blemishes are few: The front end has the usual light smattering of stonechips, including to the windscreen. The carbonfibre front splitters have a few light scuffs to them and the offside front wing has some chips above the side repeater plus an area of paint contamination. The driver’s door also has a scratch along it, the trim on the passenger door mirror is slightly damaged, and some of the numberplate screws have rusted.

Interior

The same high standard has been maintained inside with the only obvious signs of wear being light creasing and a few marks to the front seats plus a little rubbing around the cruise control button.

And what front seats they are: Trimmed in grey leather and heated, they boast substantial leg, hip, and shoulder supports, which is important given the M5 Competition’s potential for high-G shenanigans. They’re obviously electrically adjustable too, including the variable lumbar support.

The back seat passengers get their own controls for the climate-control system plus heaters for the outer seats. All get to enjoy OE overmats that protect very good carpets, and three-point M Sport seatbelts, for a discreet dash-of-flash.

The fat-rimmed, multi-function, M Sport-stitched steering wheel includes the standard flappy paddles we’re all familiar with plus the customisable M buttons. It’s heated too, a feature you’ll never want to be without after you’ve used one.

(Ditto the head-up display, which, along with that staggering performance, will help you fulfil all your fighter pilot fantasies.)

It comes fully loaded with the Comfort Package, the Ambient Air Package, the Premium Package, and Bowers & Wilkins speakers. In fact, the various functions are so comprehensive that YouTube is awash with dealer-videos that walk you through them: We did our best to test them all, and everything we found worked as it should and the only issues we uncovered are that the special key needs charging and the driver control panel is not clipped to the seat.

The headlining is clean, taut, and undamaged, thereby fulfilling everything on your three-point wish list, and the boot is a very good size: The M5 might boast supercar performance but it remains at heart a practical saloon and this practicality is bolstered by a boot lid-mounted hazard warning triangle.

As for its condition, the loading lip is unscuffed and the carpets are unmarked bar a small blemish on the offside rear.

Mechanical

The M5’s service history, which has all been carried out by the same BMW main dealer, is recorded as follows:

  • 22.05.2026 and 54,658 miles – service by North Oxford Garage including new sparkplugs and fresh brake fluid
  • 14.05.2024 and 44,196 miles – service by North Oxford Garage including front and rear differential and transfer gearbox services and fresh brake fluid
  • 27.04.2022 and 30,337 miles – service by North Oxford Garage including an intake silencer service, fresh brake fluid, and new sparkplugs
  • 27.08.2020 and 16,222 miles – service by North Oxford Garage

It starts promptly and idles beautifully – but then this is a seven-year-old car with a full main dealer history. The dashboard is free of warning lights, and it shows the reassuring message that the next service isn’t due until May 2028 or you’ve covered 19,000 miles.

You’ve gotta love the extended service intervals of modern cars, eh?

As the video demonstrates, it’s a surprisingly muted engine with the real drama being reserved for the blunt end, where the quad exhaust system howls with fury when provoked.

Our test drive went well, but then it would, wouldn’t it? The increase in power is obvious, but it is still easy to potter along in traffic with no outward sign that it is anything other than a standard example.

In case you’re worried, the seller reminded us that the Stage 1+ remap is a software-only upgrade, so DMS can easily return the car to factory specification – and they’ll do it free of charge.

But, given the M5 still potters about cleanly and smoothly, passes the MoT emissions requirement without issue, and it doesn’t affect the main-dealer servicing, we can’t see there is much of a case for deleting it.

The engine bay is strikingly clean and won’t need anything more than the odd wipe over with a clean cloth.

It’s the same story underneath; modern cars simply don’t rust like old cars – and besides, this one’s so young that it wouldn’t have had a chance to start anyway.

Some of the plastics show the usual light scuffs every modern car collects but none are serious enough to need attention and, more importantly, the carbonfibre diffuser is unmarred.

History

The BMW’s MoT certificate is valid until May 2026, and it’ll probably come as little surprise to learn that it was issued with no advisories.

The recent Vehicle History Check shows outstanding finance, the winning bidder will be provided with the settlement figure and finance agreement number from the seller so that you can pay the finance company directly and pay the remainder of the balance to the seller.

The history file also contains the BMW book pack and wallet, a stack of invoices for servicing and repairs, and the printout from the Stage 1+ remap showing the vast increases that were achieved.

Summary

This five-seat saloon can launch itself at the horizon at the rate of 211mph and is capable of lapping the Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 35 seconds.

It’ll also take your dear old mum out for Sunday lunch without raising anything more than an appreciative smile.

With peerless reliability, one of the best soundtracks of the decade, and sure-footed all-wheel drive, it could be yours for between £35,000 and £45,000.

What a time to be alive, eh?
