Background
Designed to blend driving appeal with typically BMW build quality and comfort, the 5 Series has always found firm favour with driving enthusiasts over the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class or other contemporary equivalent, with BMW’s large saloon often coming up trumps against its competition.
With the E39 generation 5 Series, BMW were determined to come out on top once again, with executives deciding that throwing extortionate amounts of money into research and development was the best way to stay on top form.
Well, it certainly worked. Not only was the styling fantastic - and largely timeless, with the generation looking remarkably modern compared to other large saloons from its day - but the level of technology and equipment within the car beggared belief, and with a plethora of trim levels and engines on offer, there was a 5 Series to suit almost any requirements.
Featuring a significant proportion of aluminium for major components such as the front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering on four and six-cylinder models and either a sedan or estate (touring) body style, the E39 5-Series was a wonderfully versatile and long-lived car, with the touring version eventually bowing out during 2004 as the last model in production.
Whilst the V8-powered E39 M5 is still widely regarded as one of the best cars to ever come out of BMW’s M-Division, what if you wanted a V8 engine without the aggressive styling and high insurance? Step right this way…
