Background

Developed in the wake of WW2, the extraordinarily refined and graceful S-series of cars are a sort of bridge between Classic and Modern Era, Pre-VW Group Bentley, utilizing the firm’s last standard separate chassis, and quickly replacing a straight-six from the 1920’s with a thoroughly up-to-date aluminum V8.

That same L410 engine finally exited production in 2020, as quintessentially Bentley as the Flying B.

Overview

This very early S2 Standard Steel Saloon is one of just 2,308 of all types produced between 1959 and 1962, including long wheelbase and coachbuilt examples. Like all S2’s, the auction car is the product of countless hours of skilled, laborious, traditional craftsmanship–combined with factory V8 power, LHD, and air conditioning, this example offers a unique and compelling experience for driver and passengers alike.

Exterior

S2 Bentleys retain the elegant two-headlight nose treatment of their S1 predecessors, a feature supplanted by a quad-light arrangement on the S3 of late 1962-1965. This particular example is both formal and bright in solid ivory, and appears to retain all correct factory trim including wheels, covers, driving lamps, and brightwork.

On the subject of brightwork, the classic and imposing waterfall grille alone is the result of many hours of expert hand soldering and polishing, atop which rides the unmistakable Flying B mascot.

Interior

Bentley interiors are always special places, and the auction car is no exception in this area. Large, legible, handsome instruments are mounted to a beautifully crafted wood panel replete with hefty, satisfying-to-operate metal switchgear, while leather, carpets, and all other materials used in the cabin’s construction are all top-notch quality.

Note the auction examples under-dash air conditioning, as well as its wonderfully traditional three-spoke steering wheel. A simple, almost austere design, these large diameter wheels are a pleasure to use, particularly when combined with effortless power steering such as the auction car’s.

Mechanical

Though introduced at the tail end of the 1950s, a V8-powered Bentley was still a novel concept when the auction car was built, and this is underscored by the engine’s tight fit–the space beneath its piano-hinged lid was clearly designed with a straight-six in mind.

The need to remove a wheel to access spark plugs is a small concession for substantial improvements in power and torque over S1 cars, however, and soon even purists were won over by the V8. It was last seen in twin-turbo form powering the magnificent 2020 Mulsanne.

History

This car is sold with limited historical documentation.

Summary

With something approaching 220 hp, a world-class automatic transmission, and a legendarily smooth, quiet cabin, S2 Bentleys are extraordinarily refined cars, as well as some of the last standard production models ever built atop a separate chassis.

Estimated $10,000 - $15,000.
