2004 Bentley Continental GT

Here’s the good news.

This car has only covered 24,000 miles in its 18 years of life, it has a service book full of Bentley main dealer stamps, and it is in very good condition, inside, outside and underneath.

It has never been photographed speeding through the gates at Manchester United’s training ground.

It has never raced up and down Park Lane at 3am.

It has never had a leopard-skin wrap.

It has never been pimped-up, tricked-out or modified in any unspeakably vulgar way.

The fastidious vendor tells us that the car has had just two equally fastidious owners before him.

It passed its MoT exam in June with flying colours, and the one advisory it picked up (a damaged wing mirror) has now been rectified.

It received a full Bentley service in August at a cost of some £800.

The car starts, goes and stops as you would hope and expect. That’s to say, it starts on the button, goes like an intercontinental ballistic missile, and stops promptly when politely asked to do so.

It has recently been fitted with a grotesquely expensive new battery and has had any minor electronic gremlins and foibles addressed and sorted by Bentley.

The keen-eyed among you will have spotted that the car is wearing rather tasteful, larger, factory-upgrade wheels.

As far as we can tell, there isn’t really any bad news.

The bodywork is in fine fettle, with panels that are free of any bumps, dinks, creases or ripples of significance.

The panel gaps and shut lines are also consistent and even.

The wheels and matching (always a good sign) Pirelli P-Zero Rosso tyres are good.

The car’s Diamond Black paintwork fair gleams with lustre and depth of shine.

The chrome work, badging, lights, trim and other exterior fixtures and fittings have been equally stoic in resisting the vicissitudes of time, weather and use.

There are one or two scuffs on the o/s/r wheel arch and on the wing above it.

There is also a scuff on the paintwork directly above the front grille.

The good news continues pretty much unabated on the inside, where the acres of cream hide, black carpet and dark wood veneers are in very good overall condition.

The front seats, which will warm you up and give you a massage if you give them half a chance, are supportive, comfortable and fully functional.

The leather upholstery shows very few signs of wear, as you would expect in a car that’s yet to reach the 25,000 mile mark.

The wood veneers are rich, glossy and undamaged everywhere, as far as we can see.

To the best of our knowledge, all buttons, knobs, dials, levers, switches, toggles and stalks do what they’re supposed to do.

There are a few marks and scuffs on the seat edges and the door surrounds attesting to the egress and ingress of people going to and from the rear seats.

The carpets and mats are in very good order, as are the door cards, save for a couple of tiny nicks to the leather on the driver’s side and what looks like a biro mark across the speaker grille on the same door card.

In a frankly disappointing attempt to depart from the high standards set and met by the rest of the car, the leather headlining has decided to rebel by become a little loose and baggy at the rear.

The boot, which is in very good condition apart from one small red mark, contains a space-saving spare and some Bentley tools.

The undersides of the car look straight and true to us and everything seems to have a good deal of structural integrity.

It’s the same story in the engine bay, where all appears to be clean, dry, present and correct.

The car has an MoT certificate valid until June 9th 2023.
