Background
Launched in 2003, the Continental GT was the first of the VW-era Bentleys and arrived at a time when Volkswagen was still smarting after being out-manoeuvred by BMW.
But, wounded pride aside, the firm had managed to snag the volume - and therefore profitable - part of the Rolls-Royce/Bentley business even if it had done so accidentally.
Despite building 9,500 Continentals a year, the demand was so great that a waiting list soon built up.
Introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the second-generation Bentley Continental GT aimed to build upon the success of its predecessor, boosting power output, improving cabin refinement and bringing the styling up-to-date with a gentle aesthetic refresh, without removing signature design cues such as the creased edge to the bonnet, general proportions or quad-headlight front end.
Available from 2012 with either a mighty six-litre, twin-turbo W12 or a twin-turbo 4-litre V8 engine that produces nearly as much power and slightly more torque, both iterations of the Continental GT transmit their prodigious grunt to the tarmac via a complex but highly effective four-wheel-drive system.
