Background

The Bentley Continental GT is a grand touring vehicle model that was first launched in 2003. It was the first model manufactured by the make under its new Volkswagen management after being acquired by the Germans in 1998. The model is still being produced, though it did receive some fundamental design modifications over the years.

The Continental GT was presented on the Bentley stand at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003 and differed from the previous R and T models in the way that it was the first Bentley ever to be mass produced and thus not coach built. Consequently, the price at launch was less than half that of its predecessor, which gave the car a much broader customer base.

Indeed, the car became a huge success, its 6.0 litre W12 with two turbos, in addition to the four-seat layout giving serious ‘daily-ing’ capabilities. The car impressed by its two-sided character; docile and enjoyable at slow speeds, but if you have the guts and a safe empty road ahead, it can be so fast, it’s almost too much power to be used anywhere on the open road. The 552 hp and enormous amounts of torque (650 Nm) put the Continental on top of the list for people looking to travel in style, with the family, and fast, as Bentley heritage requires. Of course, with such amounts of power comes fuel economy only an oil sheik could love. The Continental GT enjoys a good drink, and a lot of it. 20 litres and more if you’re in a hurry is no exception.

In 2005, the Continental GT received its first major update. New features included voice activation for the in-car telephone in six languages and additional interior trim options. Carpets and belts could now be match either to the main or secondary hide colour. Additionally, a special version was launched, call the Mulliner Driving Specification. This edition included 20-inch 7-spoke alloy wheels with 275/35 R20 tyres, alloy pedals and footrest, a chromed gear-lever, diamond quilted hide to facings, doors and rear quarter panels, embroidered ‘Bentley’ marque emblem on the seats and piano black veneer, with dark walnut also available.

Overview

The example we are offering is a 2005 example of the desirable Mulliner Driving Specification variant identified by chassis number SCBCE63W86C031024. The car features a black-on-black colour combination and RHD layout and its odometer reads 92,000 miles, which translates to approximately 148,000 kms. It is offered from current polish ownership.

Exterior

We only have a limited number of pictures at our disposal, but from the portrait shots, it appears that the car’s black paint is in good condition overall. Of course, we cannot exclude that the car on offer has suffered from stone chips or small parking scratches at this mileage. The chrome grills at the front and the chromed oval exhaust pipes appear to be undamaged and in good nick with a shiny finish. The same counts for the lights, that only show minor signs of tarnish, which can be addressed by professionally polishing them if the new owner wants to. The logo at the front shows some signs of corrosion and is slightly scratched. The black and silver wheels appear to be free from major scratches, though no detailed pictures are available to verify this. The Pirelli tyres have enough thread left and were fitted in April 2021. They have done approximately 5,000 kms since.

Interior

The inside of the example on offer is in a good state of preservation and shows the usual signs of wear. We have encountered cars with lower mileage with less a pristine interior, meaning that this example has been well cherished over the years. Both front seats are clean and not damaged by cracks or tears. As stated, they show the usual signs of wear, and the same can be said about the rear seats. The right-hand rear seat has some indentations on its seating surface, the origins of which are unknown to us. All the buttons on the dashboard, steering wheel, middle console, and seats are present and not damaged or broken. The black veneer surfaces on the dashboard and in between the seats is in very good condition, and only has minor scratches, especially in the middle of the seats. A detailing specialist could possibly get those back to perfect as-new shine. The original Nokia phone is still with the car, and should still be functional, but a non-original hands-free system has been added on the middle console. It should be possible to remove this device without leaving a trace on the veneer surface beneath. Lastly, the black veneer steering wheel, is in a good state and perfectly presentable.

Mechanical

Few pictures of the underbody are available, but from what we can make out, no damaged parts are to be seen. One picture does appear to show a rusted surface, which could be a chassis member, though it does not alarm us as this rust is not perforating. Due to the lack of images available, we cannot say much more about the underbody. The engine bay, visible in the video below, is clean, and the engine running smoothly at idle. Some corrosion is visible on the engine block, though this is perfectly normal of a 17-year-old car that was enjoyed throughout its life.

History

From the service booklets, it seems that this Continental GT was delivered new to its first owner in the Essex area in the UK. It subsequently underwent regular service at official Bentley dealers, first at Bentley Essex (44 miles, 839 miles, 9,364 miles), later on at Bentley in Edinburgh, Birmingham and Sussex. All of these services have been done at regular intervals, the last one at 81,500 miles in 2018, after which the car was possibly exported to Poland. Since then, the vehicle was maintained locally, of which all invoices are on hand. The last oil change was done in April 2022, and the car has done less than 5,000 kms since then.

Summary

The Bentley Continental GT was the first mass-produced Bentley and offered unrivalled luxury with ample power. The timeless design makes these cars look good and stand out even by today’s standards. The four seats offer comfort for four passengers, also on longer travels, a package that make the GT a serious contender for regular use and the annual holiday trip. Though the Bentley tips the scale at 2,410 kg, its W12 engine with 552 hp are enough to go seriously fast, even on twisty roads. The example on offer is a desirable 2005 Mulliner Driving Specification version and is offered with known service history. The car has done a total of 92,000 miles but has been well cared for and is thus in good condition, ready to be enjoyed by its new owner. The recent 2021 services, which included oil change and a new set of tyres, mean that the new custodian of this elegant automobile can immediately hit the road!
