Background

The original Mini needs no introduction. One of very few genuinely ground-breaking cars, the Alec Issigonis-designed Mini is rightly praised for its innovative engineering, handsome looks, surprisingly spacious interior and giant-killing handling.

It remained in continuous production for the next four decades, winning praise from all who owned or drove one. The iconic Mini provided transport for millions of families who might not otherwise have been able to afford to run a modern car. It slew all who were daft enough to compete against it in competition. It won praise from private owners, professional rally drivers, vanquished competitors, pundits and spectators, who keep it close to their hearts, even more than sixty years after it first came into being. Who would have thought in 1959, it would become one of the best-selling cars in Europe?

Overview

The vendor for this 1966 Austin Mini Mk1 Super Deluxe is dealing with it as part of a collection from a deceased estate; therefore, some of the history is quite vague.

The Mini is a one-owner car and the odometer reads 50,124 miles. The MoT certificates appear to show it's been 'around the clock' once so the mileage is likely circa. 150k. It is believed to be wearing its original coat of paint with just a few areas being touched up over the years. Nevertheless, the car presents really well for its age and has clearly been mainly in dry storage for most of its life.

Exterior

Finished in a similar colour to Old English White, the Mini, as mentioned, is thought to be in the original paint. Starting at the front of the car, the chrome work is in really good condition, with just the smallest amount of tarnishing to the bumper and overriders. The grille is in good order, with all the bars nice and straight, and the lights are free from splits or cracks. The bonnet aligns as it should and wears the original Austin badge.

Moving up to the windscreen, which is generally in good condition, with just a tiny amount of delamination showing, the seal has started to show signs of age-related perishing.

Looking to the sides of the classic Mk1 Super Deluxe, the doors appear to align as you would expect; the sliding windows work as they should and have a few marks from where they've been stuck to the seal. The opening quarter windows operate correctly, and the frames look in good order. Running over the wheel arches and sill is the aluminium trim which is in place and free from any dings. The chrome door mirrors and door handles have a small amount of tarnishing but nothing excessive.

Around to the rear and again, everything looks to be in good order with no splits or cracks in the light lenses. The bumper has some light tarnishing, and the original Austin Mini badge is in place. There is some perishing to the rear window seal and fuel filler gasket in keeping with the age. The wheels are steel and have been painted red with chrome hubcaps fitted; these are in good condition, and the tyres also have a good amount of tread remaining.

Interior

Inside, the Mini is thought to have had the seats recovered at some point in a vinyl similar to what was fitted originally. Therefore the seats are in excellent condition and don’t show any real signs of excessive wear to the front or rear. The door and quarter coverings are also finished in the same material and in excellent condition.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, the original two-spoke steering wheel is in good order and looking at the dashboard, it is covered in black vinyl for the lower section with the instruments mounted to the centre. The odometer shows a reading of just 50,124 miles, and the vendor has not confirmed if the gauges are working correctly. Although there is not a lot of switchgear, it looks to be in good condition with minimal wear to the lettering on the choke and heater controls.

The carpets are in good order with no apparent signs of any wear to mention, and above, the headlining is in place with no sagging. In the boot, there is the spare wheel, jack and wheel brace covered with a false floor and the fuel tank to the right.

Mechanical

Fitted with the original 848cc engine, the Mini has not been run since February 2022, when the vendor took over the handling of the estate, so we have not heard the car running. Looking in the engine bay, the engine presents exceptionally well and is finished in the original BMC green. There don’t appear to be any leaks from the top or bottom of the engine.

Looking at the underside, everything looks to be in order, with no obvious points of corrosion to mention. The whole underside has been coated in an underseal type covering to futureproof and hopefully stop any unwanted corrosion setting in.

It is reported from a neighbour of the gentleman whose Mini it was that the car was started and moved about on a regular basis.

History

The owner was clearly an enthusiast taking the car to shows and even coming first place which can be seen in the photo album. The original registration book is present, and several tax discs dating from 1967 until 2014 show the car was in regular use. Also, a huge selection of old MoT certificates shows the mileage over the years.

Summary

This 1966 Austin Mini Mk1 Super Deluxe looks to be very much a time warp classic in very good condition, having thought to have never been restored. To our knowledge, the car has been in storage since at least February 2022. Although it is reported to have been in use before that, we would certainly recommend a qualified mechanic carry some recommissioning work out before being used on the roads.

Once recommissioned, though, what a car! A piece of British motoring history with one previous owner, an excellent buy for anyone who fancies an untouched MK1 Mini Super Deluxe.

We estimate this British classic to bring in the region of £6,000 - £10,000.
