“ Manual - Recent Clutch Change - N400 Side Sills ”

Offered for sale in a desirable specification, benefitting from significant recent expenditure (including the all-important clutch change) and in seemingly excellent mechanical health, this Aston Martin V8 Vantage would make an excellent addition to any marque enthusiast’s garage, and is ready to use and enjoy throughout the summer months ahead. We think it will sell for between £25,000-£30,000.

Background

Unveiled to an adoring audience in 2005, the first-generation Aston Martin V8 Vantage coupé represented the first time the ‘Vantage’ badging had been used as a standalone model name, rather than denoting a high-performance variant of an existing model.

Continuing the tradition of hand-built GT cars, the V8 Vantage was marketed as the ‘base’ model in the Aston Martin range. The term ‘base’ is, of course, worlds away from what most manufacturers would consider an ‘entry level’ model, meaning in this instance that the focus was simply on being the smallest, most agile model in the range, rather than the most basic or sparsely-equipped.

Underneath the stylish, restrained bodywork sits a raucous 4.3-litre, naturally aspirated V8 engine which is coupled to either a six-speed Graziano manual transmission, or a six-speed Sportshift automated manual transmission.

With its front-mid mounted engine, rear transaxle mounted gearbox and bonded aluminium structure, the V8 Vantage struck a near perfect 49/51 front/rear weight distribution, and could sprint from 0-60 in just 4.8 seconds.

Overview

First registered in January 2007, this Onyx Black Metallic over Obsidian Black V8 Vantage Coupé is blessed with the most important option of all - a six-speed manual gearbox.

As with most Aston Martins, it would appear that the car has been owned and used by enthusiasts for all of its life, and whilst in the care of the previous owner and the vendor, it has been garaged and spent most of its recent history inside and connected to a battery conditioner, hence the low accumulated mileage since the previous MoT.

Notably, this V8 Vantage is standard barring the addition of the N400 side skirts, which subtly upgrades the side profile of the car without being too in-your-face about it.

Perhaps more importantly, the car benefits from a recent clutch change, which - as any AM enthusiast will tell you - is a big selling point, as this is a c. 2-3k job alone (the total cost for this particular job was £3831 due to the slave cylinder also being replaced, along with some attention to the rear subframe being carried out at the same time.)

Blessed with a main dealer service history until 2019 - after which the car was maintained by marque specialist AJ Tech Ltd of Devon - it is evident that the car has been mechanically maintained irrespective of cost throughout the years, making it a strong proposition for a fun summer car; a tantalising prospect for any AM enthusiast!

Exterior

Finished in Onyx Black Metallic - arguably one of the best shades for the V8 Vantage - this example presents well overall, with a rich depth and flake to the paintwork that truly pops in the sun, yet looks brooding and menacing in the shade.

There are a few aesthetic points to note, however. The offside mirror stalk has corroded and flaked, whilst there are also small patches of bubbling noted on the nearside door, nearside door handle and offside upper edge of the boot. These are common sights on Vantages of this era, so this should not appear as to be too alarming to any potential bidders.

Elsewhere, the usual cosmetic imperfections such as stone chips and very light blemishes consistent with a vehicle of this age and mileage are present, and there are also two small ‘pin’ dents on the front offside bumper, though these do not appear to have broken the paint.

Looking along the flanks of the car, there are no signs of any impact damage, and the vendor states that the car has no known accident history.

Under the arches, the wheels are wrapped in a mix of Michelin PS4 tyres (front) and Bridgestone Potenzas on the rear. All wheels present in good order, with a few blemishes and imperfections visible upon closer inspection.

Interior

Inside, the cabin looks to be in great order throughout, having evidently been used considerately and carefully over the years.

The outer seat bolsters exhibit some typical light wear such as creases, whilst the outer edge of the driver’s seat base also displays some blemishes, though the seats are free from any rips, tears or damage.

Up above, the headliner is secure and in good condition throughout, whilst, elsewhere, the high-traffic touch-points such as the switchgear, steering wheel, shifter and door cards exhibit a commensurate usage patina consistent with the car’s mileage.

One noted issue is that the instrument binnacle leather has come unstuck on the leading edge. This is only visible from outside through the windshield (as shown in the gallery below) but would benefit from being rectified.

In the rear, the boot is tidy and clean, with no noted staining or issues.

There are no warning lights on the dashboard, and the vendor reports no known faults with any of the switches, displays or electrical systems in the cabin.

Mechanical

At the heart of this V8 Vantage is the early 4.3-litre V8 AJV8 engine, which appears to be in rude health and showed no sign of any untoward behaviour during our time with the vehicle, happily starting hot-or-cold, idling and pulling well out on the road.

Equally, the gearbox is lovely and smooth, no doubt benefitting from the recent documented clutch and slave cylinder change.

No mechanical faults were noted in our experience, and the vendor reports no known faults, other than the rear tyres ‘perhaps getting a little low’ on tread.

Under the bonnet, the engine presents in good condition, though there are signs of corrosion to the various fixtures and fittings that a fastidious owner may wish to rectify, whilst there are patches of bubbling around the bonnet catch.

The most recent MoT took place on 15 May 2023, showing a first-time pass with advisories only for the condition of the rear tyres. The latest service was carried out in June 2022 at 52,004 miles, consisting of a ‘10K Service’ + MoT costing £604.41.

History

Included with the sale of the vehicle is the V5 registered keepers document showing 5 former keepers, the stamped service record comprised exclusively of main dealer and marque specialist stamps, a number of MoT certificates, servicing invoices from AJ Tech LTD (including an invoice for the aforementioned clutch change) and two sets of keys.

We’ve carried out a HPi check on the car, and the results from this can be found at the end of the documentation gallery below, along with the rest of the paperwork we’ve received with the vehicle.
