Background

First seen in 1967 as the quad-headlight DBS, a straight-six powered replacement for the DB6, this stunning shape would come to define Aston Martin for more than two decades. By 1969, with Aston’s new all alloy, quad cam V8 finally ready for primetime, cars equipped with the fabulous Tadek Market-designed unit became known as the DBS V8, and from 1972, simply as “V8”.

These cars are an entirely unique mix of sophistication and muscle, and are wholly comfortable playing up either characteristic - this one’s bright color, unpainted wheels, and lack of factory aero at either end really emphasize its elegant GT side.

Background

First seen in 1967 as the quad-headlight DBS, a straight-six powered replacement for the DB6, this stunning shape would come to define Aston Martin for more than two decades. Overview

According to Aston’s historic Newport Pagnell factory, production of these cars required upward of 1,200 hours of hand labor, amounting to roughly one year’s full-time worth of work for a single person. This process involved hand-forming body panels by wooden buck and hammer, the English wheel, and other traditional methods now largely lost to history.

One of fewer than 970 Series 3 cars made, the auction example may be well suited to any individual seeking an attractive LHD, automatic transmission car with above average cosmetics.

Exterior

The car looks quite straight underneath reflective metallic paint, and all factory trim and brightwork seems to be complete. This includes great looking 15” factory alloy wheels, as well as discreet Aston Martin V8 badging seen on the front fender vents.

As mentioned before, options can really lean these cars more heavily towards one of their dual personalities, and this one’s colors and lack of wings emphasize its more civilized traits, provided you don’t linger on the hood’s massive power bulge, or the twin, large diameter polished exhaust pipes, or the lunging stance…

Interior

The car presents similarly well inside, with all its many large, attractive white-on-black Smiths gauges accounted for and situated behind a simple but beautifully tactile steering wheel - note the pronounced dish and distinct rim shape.

Besides a missing head unit, controls and trim appear to be complete, and hunting down a period appropriate stereo (and retrofitting Bluetooth!) sounds like fun.

Mechanical

As suggested by the exterior power bulge, this car’s engine has quite an elaborate intake setup. Though hidden under cover of a large factory plenum fed by dual fresh air intake ducts, a quartet of vertical, dual-choke Webers fuel the sophisticated V8 beneath, contributing to both an orchestral intake roar as well as roughly 305 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque.

History

This vehicle is offered without known history.

Summary

Left hand drive, a/c, and two pedals could make this example ideal for late summer cruising, and the big, exotic, alloy V8 up front can bring the music until the perfect cassette deck is found.

Estimated $80,000 - $120,000.
