Background

The replacement for the 1750 range, the 2000 GT Veloce or GTV was introduced in 1971 with production running for 5 years until 1976. Hugely advanced for its time, it was based on a shortened Giulia platform, which is one of the most attractive designs to come from Giorgetto Giugiaro. The 2000 GTV was gifted a powerful engine to match its lightweight shell whilst it had 4 hydraulic operated disc brakes, something that was novel at the time. The 1962cc twin cam, four-cylinder engine produced a respectable 132 bhp meaning it was more than a match for many of the sports cars of the era.

Overview

This beautiful Alfa 2000 GT Veloce, manufactured in 1973 and first registered in 1975 was originally registered in Italy to a Doctor who planned to bring the car to the UK. Once over on UK soil, the car ended up in the ownership of the late Piero Pesaro, who was an Alfa Romeo mechanic and racing driver of some repute. Piero had a garage in London where he imported, sold, and maintained Alfas which is where this car found its next owner. The next owner in the story just so happened to be the current keeper’s grandparents and the car has been in the family ever since 1981 when it was purchased by the current keeper’s grandparents. It was taken over by the current owner in 1996. Since 1981 the Alfa has been a cherished and loved family vehicle with the current owner’s grandmother driving the Alfa daily to the local shops and to do the school run.

The Alfa was an important family member then, and as such was afforded the same care, love, and financial resources as you would for family. Piero was close on hand to help with any of the mechanicals too. In the Alfa’s time with the family, it has had a full engine rebuild by Piero, and the body had been given a rolling restoration type fix up with the top half being done then the bottom half. It’s also had another refresh circa 2007/2009 in the form of a total body restoration, fully stripped down, all bodywork repaired with old repairs remedied too. Body parts were swapped out for much higher quality ones from Classic Alfa and once complete it was wrapped up with a full re-spray in its original colour.

The last 12 years have seen the Alfa not used much with only around 3000 miles being racked up in that time. However, despite the Alfa’s much quieter lifestyle these past few years, there has been a resurgence of these car’s popularity and an introduction of more aftermarket support. Due to this, the current owner has managed to replace much of the worn miscellaneous parts around the car with more modern safety conscious items, such as the windscreen for example.

This Alfa now comes to us for auction as due to work and other commitments the car doesn’t get as much use as it needs for it to be constantly at its best.

Exterior

Periwinkle Blue is the colour adorning this Alfa, we start with that because it’s an unusual colour and not a common one to see on a 2000 GT Veloce. The car has had a respray in its original colour after some bodywork was carried out and as a result the current owner managed to track down the chemical recipe for the paint which the current owner will share should the Alfa go for another face lift at some point.

Another uncommon addition to the Alfa is the wheels, which were thought to be a factory option, they are called Momo Vega’s and are said to mimic aspects of the cloverleaf design. The wheels appear to be in good condition but might benefit from a spruce up with some elbow grease.

In terms of the condition of the exterior, it has been cherished during its life, spending the vast majority with the same family and remains in excellent usable condition, we only have to point you to the photo gallery to show you just how good the car is.

The Alfa presents beautifully and the closer you look at the Periwinkle Blue the more of its shine you start to notice. There is the odd minor blemish here and there but far less than you’d expect and it allows the Alfa to be used, if it was a trailer queen, you’d worry about taking it anywhere and that’s the opposite of what this car deserves.

There have been several new items added to the car that help with its aesthetic, such as a new front grill and a new boot lid for example. In summary this is a wonderfully presented Alfa that has been cherished all its life and deserves to continue to get the same level of care and attention into the future.

Interior

The signs of care and attention continue to the interior of the Alfa with the condition in the cabin being very good overall. That huge, deep dish, wood rimmed steering wheel commanding attention against the subtle black dash, which is also in good condition with no excessive fading and only two small cracks above the top vents which is common.

The current owner has had the front seats re-trimmed, and a new carpet set fitted so the inside is now as welcoming as it was when it was much younger. The rear seats are showing some signs of age, but their recommissioning will be up to the new owner.

The headlining remains in good condition, perhaps some sections needing a little more spray adhesive but there are no excessive rips, tears or discolouration to be seen. There has been one L shaped repair to the passenger side bear the door.

Mechanical

The underside of the Alfa looks to be in good condition with a healthy dosing of underseal to prevent the dreaded tin worm from taking hold. A lot of the components underneath look to be relatively free from corrosion and damage visually.

Driveline and suspension components seem to be well covered from the elements too and the current owner reports that the car drives great. The exhaust was new as of 2022 and is a steel straight pipe with a back box delete from Classic Alfa as are nearly all the new parts around the car.

Elsewhere the car has had 4 brand new brake callipers a new master cylinder, it’s had the carbs tuned and cleaned, new plugs, oil and filter changes as well as the steering and tracking done. Important to mention too is the electronic ignition with the 1,2,3 distributor.

Whilst the Alfa hasn’t got an MOT due to it being exempt, the owner has had a trained mechanic and MOT tester perform a full safety check on the car resulting in all systems found to be in good health.

The Alfa comes with its original jack, which is necessary for the car and costs in the region of £250 aftermarket. It also comes with some miscellaneous spare parts for the new owner including the original brake callipers should the new owner want to trade them in to Classic Alfa.

History

The Alfa has had 6 previous owners and was registered overseas, despite this, the paperwork file is extensive, documenting much, if not all of its life’s history. A full V5C is present as well as some original shop manuals and brochures alongside some tuning manuals and maintenance books. There is also a re-print of an article on the 2000 GT Veloce Special Equipment specifications from Autocar in 1972. This lists out the different aspects present on this car as well as the original retail price.

The Alfa has had quite a lot of work done to it, with metalwork, and paint. It still does need some things, but these are very minor, wheel refurbs for example, there is one chip on the inner headlamp and the rear seats needing retrimming. The paperwork file shows the extent of the care and attention this Alfa has received, we’d urge you to take a look through the photo gallery below to see all the invoices.

Summary

A fine example of a well loved and cared for Alfa, one that yearns to be used daily and thrives off the attention. It’s been kept to original as much as possible and benefits from being owned by one family since 1981.

The owner tells us that the new owner could purchase the car and be off to the Goodwood Revival in September with as little effort as a wash and shine and we won’t argue with that. We’d love to see this wonderful car rock up to the show, turning heads and generating smiles.

We estimate this vehicle to fetch between £20,000 - £25,000 in auction.
