Background

The International L Series was a range of trucks produced by International Harvester beginning in 1949. The L Series encompassed trucks of all sizes from light duty pickups and delivery vehicles all the way to full-size tractor-trailers. After four years, the L Series was discontinued in 1952 and replaced by the R Series.

Overview

The L Series trucks were modified quite dramatically when compared to their predecessor, the KB Series. L Series trucks became larger in just about every aspect with a longer hood, taller body, and wider fenders. L Series trucks swelled in size to accommodate bigger engines, bigger chasses, and bigger wheels. 6, 8, and 9.5ft beds were available, and all of them could also be ordered with removable sides. Luxury features for the time such as electric wipers, radios, and clocks were all available options for the L range.

Exterior

This L110 is finished in a bright, glossy shade of red. While the paint looks excellent, there are a few flaws to be seen on the outside. There are some scratches on top of the front passenger quarter panel next to the hood, and some chips in the hood in that same area. On the opposite side, closer to the driver’s door, there are several inconsistencies in the paint surrounding the ‘International’ badge. Towards the rear fenders, there are more areas that look like they have been covered with red. The bed of the truck is a little rough as well. The wood around the edges could benefit from being replaced, and the bed itself would benefit from a power wash and a hefty sanding. Overall, this International has a handful of bumps and bruises, but what farm truck doesn’t. There is no major damage to be seen on the outside, and a majority of these flaws could be addressed with some quality touch-up work.

Interior

The single cab to this L110 pickup is sparse. The red leather bench seat is clean and relatively unmarked, although there is some spotting on the seat back towards the center. The door panels are clean but definitely show signs of age. The dashboard was painted silver and looks very clean, as are the gauges and switches mounted within it. The radio mount is understood to be an aftermarket addition for modern convenience. The black Bakelite steering wheel is in good condition overall but is cracking in some areas. The truck does have Buick floormats, but marque aside they fit snugly into their respective positions.

Mechanical

The underside of this L110 is clean. Everything is intact, and solid. That being said, there is some surface corrosion on some of the components underneath. The exhaust system is clean for the most part, with one component exhibiting the most surface corrosion of any piece underneath, which in the grand scheme of things is still relatively minor. The engine bay is in good condition. It appears that the block itself was repainted at some point as well as the exhaust manifold.

History

The seller’s father purchased this International after seeing one be used on a vineyard in Sonoma, California. The father used the truck to deliver vegetables to clients. The truck features a three-speed column transmission, and a novelty clown horn which made the truck into an excellent conversation piece helpful for drumming up business. The seller had the fuel tank removed, cleaned, and reattached, and the truck still starts and drives just as well as it did when it rolled off the assembly line 70 years ago. It was also noted that the tires are new and have plenty of tread left.

Summary

The International L110 is a modest truck that effortlessly captures the spirit of ‘50s Americana. The cabin is sparse, but the L110 proudly hangs its hat on being more than capable of getting the driver wherever he or she needs to go. This specific example is a little rough around the edges, but armed with some touch-up paint, new wood boards, and a little bit of elbow grease, this L110 can easily be returned to show quality. If you are looking for a vintage truck, look no further.

The Market by Bonhams is excited to offer this International L110 pickup truck for online auction with no reserve, and an estimate between $15,000 and $20,000.
