Background

The second iteration of the now-legendary R32 model, the MKV Golf R32 was based upon the standard mark 5 Golf platform, but featured numerous aesthetic tweaks and upgrades, all-wheel-drive (via a Haldex system, christened ‘4Motion’) and - most importantly - a 3.2-litre naturally-aspirated VR6 engine, giving it a wonderful guttural howling noise on full chat, and a resounding burble on idle.

The engine itself was actually largely similar to that seen in the previous (MK IV Golf) R32, which had been tweaked to extract an extra 10bhp. 0-62 times remained impressive a 6.5 seconds, and would go on to a governed top speed of 155 mph.

Inside, the cabin was almost indistinguishable from the top-specification GTI of the era, though numerous desirable options - such as the coveted Recaro wing-back seats - and a few subtle :R badges denoted this as the ‘halo’ model in the range.

Externally, the wheel arches were enlarged, a twin centre-exit exhaust fitted, a revised front end (with significantly more chrome) and a few other tweaks made the R32 visually distinct, with plentiful options for further aftermarket customisation available for hands-on owners.

Production of the V6 Golf R32 ended in 2009, with following generations of :R models forgoing the V6 engine in favour of highly-tuned turbocharged inline-four powerplants.

Overview

This particular example is an early-model, three-door example, finished in arguably the most desirable colour combination of Deep Blue Pearlescent over a black leather interior with silver wheels - the exact specification that was used for the majority of the press launch photographs, and became the ‘signature’ specification for the MK5 R32.

First registered in 2006, this is what we’d call the ‘halo’ specification for the model, being a three-door body, manual, finished in Deep Blue over Black, and also boasting the desirable Recaro wing-back seats, a strong list of options, and 18” alloy wheels.

Standard throughout save for an upgraded Milltek exhaust system - a common modification on these V6-engined hot hatches - this is a wonderful example of the breed, and was initially destined for life as part of a collection whilst in the care of the vendor, though these plans never came to fruition, meaning this is an opportunity for one lucky enthusiast to obtain the true ‘halo car of the fifth-generation Golf family, and the last of the naturally-aspirated Golfs to wear the ‘R’ badge.

Exterior

Resplendent in its rich, metallic blue hue, this Golf R32 is still a real head-turner of a hot hatch to this day, no doubt helped by the lovely burble emanating from the upgraded Milltek exhaust.

Looking along the flanks, we can see no signs of any impact damage, scuffed bodywork or mis-aligned panels, with VW’s excellent build quality of the period standing the test of time with ease, and plentiful TLC over the years, judging by its condition.

The paintwork itself is also in outstanding condition overall, wearing only the usual light smattering of stone chips to the front end and exposed edges, as you’d expect to find on a high-performance hatchback such as this. The only particularly noteworthy signs of age and use that we can find are located on the nearside edge of the front bumper, where you’ll find a few larger chips that would benefit from being either touched-in or addressed by a bodyshop, given the excellent condition of the rest of the vehicle .

All four wheels are pristine, having recently been refurbished in February 2022, with the invoice for this work being viewable in the history folder below. As far as we can see, there are no signs of any damage to the light lenses, nor any heavy wear or tarnishing to the various chrome trims and details that adorn the well-proportioned bodywork of this three-door hatch.

Interior

Inside, the well-built cabin presents in excellent order throughout, having evidently enjoyed careful and fastidious ownership throughout its lifetime, and plenty of TLC to keep it in tip-top condition over the years.

The desirable wing-back seats remain in fantastic condition, showing only light creasing and minor bolster wear consistent with a cherished vehicle, and no signs of any rips, tears of damage that we can see. In the rear, the bench seats are in even better condition, having likely been used only sparingly throughout this Golf’s 16 years of existence.

Elsewhere, even high-traffic areas such as the inner door sills, door cards, arm rests, steering wheel and shifter remain in very good order, with only a few light marks and mild usage patina being present.

Up above, the headlining is taut throughout and shows no signs of any sagging or noticeable marks or staining, whilst the carpets are also in fine fettle, with the same being true of the boot. Overall, it’s clear to see that this Golf has been kept in great order throughout its lifetime, and its condition reflects its cherished existence.

All systems, including the heated seats and split-zone climate, are reported to be in full working order, with no known faults inside the cabin making themselves apparent to either the vendor or our photographer.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the 3.2-litre naturally aspirated VR6 engine is in excellent visual condition, having benefitted from extensive valeting and continued care. According to the vendor and our team, there are no mechanical faults emanating from the engine, and no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard.

In fact, the only real issue picked up from the vehicle is a slight ‘resistance’ felt whilst turning the vehicle in a tight circle during our photo shoot, which, it has been suggested, could be related to the rear differential, though this has not been independently verified.

Underneath, there are no signs of any concerns, corrosion issues or leaks, with everything looking to be in good order throughout.

The most recent MoT exam - dated 05 August 2021 - showing a first-time pass with an advisory for a deteriorated offside CV boot.

History

Included with the car is the V5 registered keepers document showing seven former keepers, the stamped service record, old MoT certificates and a mixture of VW and specialist invoice history, along with other miscellaneous documentation relating to servicing and other work.

Notable highlights include the paperwork for the most recent service in February 2022, which was carried out at 93,461 miles. This work included a standard oil and filter change, along with a Haldex oil and filter service.

There is also an invoice for a new steering rack fitted in 2008 by Volkswagen, with the work having been carried out under warranty.

As always, all documentation has been photographed and is available to view below.

Summary

Being the last of the V6-engined Golf R models and boasting three pedals, the desirable paint/trim specification of Deep Blue Pearlescent over black leather, and with a three-door body shell, this 2006 Golf MKV R32 is a true enthusiast or collectors model, offering an engaging drive with a fantastic soundtrack to boot.

Offered in wonderful condition throughout and freshly serviced, this is an opportunity not to be missed by any VW, German car or hot hatch enthusiast, driver or collector, and is offered with an estimate of £8,000 to £12,000.
