Background
The second iteration of the now-legendary R32 model, the MKV Golf R32 was based upon the standard mark 5 Golf platform, but featured numerous aesthetic tweaks and upgrades, all-wheel-drive (via a Haldex system, christened ‘4Motion’) and - most importantly - a 3.2-litre naturally-aspirated VR6 engine, giving it a wonderful guttural howling noise on full chat, and a resounding burble on idle.
The engine itself was actually largely similar to that seen in the previous (MK IV Golf) R32, which had been tweaked to extract an extra 10bhp. 0-62 times remained impressive a 6.5 seconds, and would go on to a governed top speed of 155 mph.
Inside, the cabin was almost indistinguishable from the top-specification GTI of the era, though numerous desirable options - such as the coveted Recaro wing-back seats - and a few subtle :R badges denoted this as the ‘halo’ model in the range.
Externally, the wheel arches were enlarged, a twin centre-exit exhaust fitted, a revised front end (with significantly more chrome) and a few other tweaks made the R32 visually distinct, with plentiful options for further aftermarket customisation available for hands-on owners.
Production of the V6 Golf R32 ended in 2009, with following generations of :R models forgoing the V6 engine in favour of highly-tuned turbocharged inline-four powerplants.
