Background
The Subaru Impreza. It’s a name that conjures up performance, all-wheel drive traction, and of course, rallying pedigree. It also conjures up a special name – Colin McRae. He is the late legendary rally driver who won 25 rallies, 1 championship, and left us with his infamous motto – “if in doubt, flat out”. Although he may be gone, his legacy with Subaru is still alive and kicking, and to commemorate his championship win in 1995, Subaru released the Impreza Series McRae edition.
Only 200 were made, all in the UK by motorsport specialists Prodrive. All 200 were finished in Rally Blue Mica with contrasting gold alloys provided by Speedline. As well as Gold alloys, the Series McRae also offered standard features including Recaro seats, uprated springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars, special badges, and a numbered plaque on the centre console.
Powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol, the Series McRae offers 214bhp along with 290Nm, which may seem a bit pedestrian by today’s standards, but in 1995 that would have been a big deal. Mind you, it still has what it takes to keep up with some performance cars of today as it takes 6.1 seconds to hit 60mph – that’s not to be sniffed at!
