Background

The Silver Spur is a longer wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, the first model in Rolls-Royce’s SZ series, and it was in production from 1981 to 1999. Along with the other models in the SZ series, the Silver Spur was one of the last Crewe-built Rolls-Royces with truly British DNA running through it. The following generations of the ‘The World’s Best Car’ would be built by BMW in a new facility at Goodwood, England. It featured Rolls-Royce’s familiar four-door monocoque bodyshell and a smooth yet powerful 6750cc V8 engine. This powerhouse is allied to a four-speed automatic transmission, all-round independent suspension, adaptive ride control, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. It was the first Rolls-Royce to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. The Silver Spur III was manufactured between 1994 and 1996.

Overview

This 1993 Rolls Royce Silver Spur III is handsome and stately, donning the then "new" and fashionable colour of Wildbury burgundy paintwork with grey leather upholstery. It has ticked up 118,750 on the odometer. The vendor bought this car earlier this year and his son is selling it on his behalf as the vendor now spends the majority of his time outside the UK. As such, he is looking to reduce his extensive car collection as he is not getting the time to drive this motor. The vendor is keen for this car to go to a new home where it can be much loved and used as a daily driver. The vendor’s son explains: “He [his father] drove it a fair bit when he first got it but he’s spending the majority of his time outside the country, so it’s not getting driven. He wants the car to go to a home that can get the best out of it”.

The car comes with a complete service history. The previous keeper spent the best part of £5000 on the car and, in the words of the vendor’s son: “The prior owner didn’t scrimp on anything… all the electrics and mechanics work really well”. This car has had seven prior keepers and has recently had an MoT.

Exterior

The front end is characterised by its iconic and large, upright Rolls Royce grille that is adorned with vertical chrome slats. Positioned above the grille is the distinguished Spirit of Ecstasy ornament. The rectangular headlights and tail lights look to be in good shape throughout, with no evidence of cracking or condensation build up. The sides are marked by its elongated and angular silhouette. The doors feature chrome trim and handles and the windows are framed with polished chrome. The wide rear is protected by its prominent rubber bumper. The boot lid features a chrome strip to designate the model and the Rolls Royce badge, which serve as a subtle reminder of the vehicle's prestigious lineage. It sits on a set of elegant chrome and burgundy rimmed alloy wheels, which look to be in fine order. Despite overall being a very clean car, the only imperfections to the bodywork worth highlighting are some ballooning to a couple of bits of lacquer by the boot and where the roof curves over, as well as a blemish to the passenger side rear wheel arch. There is also a slight scuff to the rubber work on the corner of the front bumper, and a chip to the paintwork on the driver’s door.

Interior

The grey and burgundy Connolly leather interior is every bit as sumptuous and luxurious as you’d hope to find in a Rolls-Royce. The upholstery is not particularly creased or worn and looks to be free of any cracks or splits. The burgundy dash top contrasts the grey seats nicely.

The plush Wilton pure wool carpets and two-tone door cards seem to be in good order, though there is a slight mark on the carpet on the boot floor. The car comes with red carpet mats, which appear to have protected the carpets well. The wood veneers on the dashboard, centre console, door capping's and inserts are rich and glossy. As is typical of a Silver Spur the backs of the front seats are furnished with veneer picnic tables, and they look to be in nice condition.

Mechanical

The 6.75-liter V8 engine, known as the "6.75-liter L-series V8”, is renowned for its smoothness, torque, and effortless power delivery. The engine is engineered to prioritise quiet operation and reliability, which minimises noise, vibration, and harshness. It utilises electronic fuel injection and electronic ignition to enhance fuel efficiency and performance. The engine and engine bay look tidy and dry, suggesting that this car has been well looked-after throughout the course of its life. The undersides of the car appear to have plenty of structural integrity from what we can see. Everything looks to be in its right and proper place.

History

This car has had seven prior keepers. It comes with a comprehensive history and it has an active MoT through to April next year. The car has had MoTs every year from 2006 apart from 2019 and 2020 (but suspect this is due to Covid). Invoices show the car has had the best part of £5000 spent on it, including work to its alarm ECU and remote key which cost just shy of £2000 alone.

Summary

This grand Rolls-Royce Silver Spur has been well looked-after throughout its life. As such, we believe it will offer its next owner many years of classy motoring from one of the world’s most prestigious marques.

We think a prospective buyer will have to part with somewhere between £12,000 and £16,000 to take this car home, unquestionably making this a lot of car for the money.
