“ Highly Desirable LWB Model - Well Preserved - No Reserve ”

At an estimated value of $25,000 and $35,000, the 1962 Silver Cloud is a great mix of traditional Rolls-Royce styling and the abundance of performance that its V8 engine offers. This 1962 example seems to have been put through some neat maintenance or restoration work, both on the outside and inside. On the whole, it looks decent. There are nice touches that help it stand out in terms of originality, like the dealer plate on the door sill. It also has power windows and an AC, so using it like a regular car won't even feel odd. But having said that, no Rolls-Royce is 'regular' and this one is too special to be ignored.

Background

The Silver Cloud was a prominent post-war model line to be rolled out of Crewe. It was also the last time Rolls-Royce employed a body-on-frame structure, as all succeeding models adopted a unibody/monocoque structure. The Silver Cloud II was the second iteration of the Silver Cloud and while it carried on with the same overall design as its predecessor, it benefitted from a substantial engine upgrade — from the straight-six to a V8. Body options were a standard steel one from the factory, or a variety of coach-built choices available for those who wanted their Rolls-Royce a bit more distinct.

Overview

Presented here is a 1962 model of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. Its chassis code, LLCC83, gives away that it's a long-wheelbase model, specced left-hand-drive from the factory, and was produced in 1961. Its odometer indicates just 12991 miles, and given the bodywork and interior, it mightn't be a surprise if it's done only that many miles. But in all likeliness, it's hard to rule out some sort of restoration, too.

Exterior

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II is a great example of updated internals but an appearance that doesn't look too modern. With the Silver Cloud III, Rolls-Royce went ahead with a slightly unconventional quad headlamp setup, whereas the Silver Cloud II is more in line with what you'd expect from Rolls-Royce. Still, a mighty-looking car, if a tiny bit understated in comparison to its successor. Its stately appearance just can't be ignored, and the judicious use of chrome and pinstriping complements the long wheelbase car's looks.

In terms of condition, apart from some age-related marks, it looks fine, this Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. The paintwork will need some attention, especially if you intend to make the look closer to how it'd have looked when leaving the Rolls-Royce plant in Crewe, England.

Interior

With a longer wheelbase, the Silver Cloud II (LWB) offered a great deal of room inside and to enable the rear passengers to enjoy privacy, a cabin divider was also included. The usual high-quality material list includes Connolly leather and veneer for the dashboard. The rather simple dashboard layout has the meters and controls placed at the center, whereas, on the other side of the cabin divider, there are two foldout tables.

This 1962 example, in terms of overall condition, looks fairly decent — as one can see in the attached photo gallery below. There's some use-related wear but nothing excessive. The use of a modern radio with door-mounted speakers mightn't be to everyone's taste, though.

Mechanical

With the advent of the Silver Cloud II, Rolls-Royce moved from a 4.8-liter straight-six to a 6.2-liter V8. This might've been slightly less economical to run, but it had enough power to effortlessly carry around this 2+ ton barge. The car also benefitted from hydraulic brakes and independent suspension up front. And the 127-inch wheelbase was longer than the earlier Silver Cloud II's 123-inch.

History

The Silver Cloud series was brought alongside the Bentley S-series, and in total, some 13,000 cars are said to be produced in a decade ('55 - '65). The Silver Cloud II was introduced in the late 50s and it was on sale for three years till 1962. It also marked a change to the V8 engine, which would continue to power Rolls-Royces for decades.
