“ A lovingly created homage to the famous 911R car has been repurposed for rallying. ”

... and has proven itself on the Historic Acropolis Rally.

Background

The first Porsche 911 (née 901) got the new overhead cam, dry sump, flat six-cylinder engine, clutch and transaxle nearly right.

With mechanical specifications changed so much from the 356, Porsche's engineers elected to stay with what they knew and understood: a low-mounted, horizontally-opposed, rear-mounted engine with rear wheel drive and transaxle.

They accordingly packaged their new car tightly, fitting everything into a short wheelbase of 2,211mm.

The first 911s were powered by an air-cooled motor of 1991cc capacity and had the 5-speed transmission from the 904. Most were fixed heads, though a Targa-top was also offered.

Overview

The car is being sold as part of a large private collection. It has been on static display as a museum exhibit for a number of years so, consequently, our assessment of it is made purely on the grounds of its appearance.

It will require recommissioning and is sold strictly as seen. The only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery.  In most cases the papers shown are photocopies, unless otherwise stated.

The cars, while located in Greece, may be subject to your local rate of import VAT.

This 1966 RHD 911 was fully rebuilt to the authentic works spec of the legendary 911R – a vanishingly rare 911 with just 20 examples ever made.

Examples of the genuine article change hands for £millions today.

The work was carried out by Northern Ireland specialists 911 Services.

Taking 6 years to complete and costing in excess of £40,000, the project included rebuilding the car’s shell for optimum strength.

The ‘R’ spec engine was fettled and tuned to deliver 206bhp, with close-ratio gearing enabling a top speed of 116mph at around 6500rpm.

The car was specifically built for full FIA compliance with a view to being rallied at some point.

That ambition was realised once the car moved to Greece, where it spent several years being prepared for action.

It competed in the 4th Historic Acropolis Rally.

It was last used in 2008.

The car is in excellent all-round condition.

Exterior

One look at the car’s decals, roll-cage and rally-ready spot-lights tells you that this is a very single-minded, purposeful machine.

The bodywork is straight and true throughout, and the car’s shut-lines and panel gaps have all the Teutonic exactness we’ve come to expect of Zuffenhausen’s products.

There are no significant dents, dinks or creases visible on the bodywork.

The paintwork and decals look fine as far as we can tell, with the only notable exception being on the spot-lights, where the paint is peeling and flaking.

The blue Fuchs-style wheels appear to be in very good order, from what we can discern.

The lights, lenses, badging and other exterior fixtures and fittings all seem to be following the same script in terms of quality and condition.

Interior

It’s a rally car so don’t expect cup holders, picnic tables or carpets.

The necessarily spartan interior is focussed on rallying, as evidenced by the cut-out switches, the safety, comms and timing equipment, and the Sparco bucket seats.

All of it looks to be in excellent condition.

Having neither started nor driven the car, we can’t vouch for the efficacy of any controls, switches, gauges, dials or other mechanical or electrical systems and components.

Mechanical

Unlike the engine bays of more modern 911s, you can actually see the engine in this car – and what we’ve seen appears to be notably clean, dry, orderly and in its right and proper place.

History

The documentation includes copies of Greek and UK registration documents, an itemised list of work carried out in Greece to prepare the car for rallying between 2003 and 2008, and numerous photographs of the car being worked on and used.

Summary

This lovingly created homage to the famous 911R car has been repurposed for rallying and has proven itself on the Historic Acropolis Rally.

Whether the successful bidder adds it to an existing collection or uses it for rallying, it looks to have all the qualities and capabilities required to successfully meet either objective.
