The fourth-generation Plymouth Fury marked a return to the model being a so-called ‘full size’ car in the American market, based upon the Chrysler C-body platform. Available in three trims (I, II and III) options included automatic transmissions, power steering, stereo radios, electronically-folding vinyl tops and air-conditioning.

For 1967, the bodywork of the Fury was restyled with a notably more sharp, aggressive profile, with deep-set headlight stacks, sharper roofline and other, less conspicuous changes which gave an overall more ‘muscular’ look to this 17-foot American classic.

Available with a variety of engines from a 225ci (3.7) inline-six up to a monstrous 440ci (7.2) V8, 1967 was the final year for the non-Lightweight A (thin-wall casting, noted as ‘LA’ 318ci engine) and this example shown here is an example that uses this final-year engine.

A classic American icon of monstrous proportions, this particular example also has a party trick up its sleeve, just in case driving a Plymouth in the UK didn’t quite garner enough attention by itself…

Overview

First registered in January 1967 and imported to the UK in November 2011, this Plymouth Fury III has only one former UK keeper, but otherwise little is known about its previous history.

Purchased as a ‘lockdown’ project by the current owner, the plan was to go through the car top-to-bottom, rectify any known issues, tidy up a few changes that the previous keeper made that weren’t to our vendor’s satisfaction, and generally tidy up this ‘land yacht’ to a high standard.

This Plymouth’s party piece - the adjustable hydraulic suspension - had already been fitted prior to the current owner’s purchase, but our vendor re-located the switches to the dashboard to tidy up the cabin, and also added some additional wiring so that the alternator also charges the additional battery in the boot for the hydraulic suspension.

The interior was then stripped back to bare metal for assessment, fully cleaned, and over 100 meters of ‘legacy’ wiring was removed, tidied up and sorted for ease of maintenance and understanding. The carpets were replaced, the seats were re-trimmed and a custom enclosure built for the modern stereo unit, with modern speakers throughout and 2x large units in the boot.

Onto the engine, and the standard single-barrel carburettor was removed and replaced with a four-barrel Holley Street Avenger 4BBL, along with an Edelbrock pro-flo hydraulic cleaner and a Crosswind dual-plane intake manifold to let the engine ‘breathe’ far better than when it left the factory. The exhaust was also addressed, with the standard item being replaced by a set of Magnaflow stainless-steel mufflers and a Stainless Steel X-pipe. Finally, the wiring was also neatened up and checked-through on the engine, along with a service being carried out.

Elsewhere, the power steering unit was rebuilt due to excessive play, and all four headlights were replaced.

Exterior

Finished in a wonderfully deep, dark purple which looks almost black until the sunlight hits it, this Plymouth Fury III is in good overall condition aesthetically, but leaves some potential on the table for the next owner to ‘take it up a notch’ in terms of its appearance, whether that be a simple paint correction or a full-on lowrider-style paint job.

The paintwork itself presents well, but would benefit from a significant correction/machine polishing to remove a number of swirls and ‘ghost’ marks within the lacquer. Otherwise, it is largely free from any major blemishes or imperfections, other than those displayed in the gallery below.

At the rear, the tail lights appear to be missing some trims or require some attention, but they are perfectly functional as they are. Up front, the replaced headlights are in great condition, and the various chrome trims are present-and-correct, with a spare side strip in the boot.

Up above, the vinyl roof is in excellent condition with no rips, tears or damage that we could see. The rear window does, however, show some UV damage and creasing marks.

All four of the American Sprint wheels are in very good condition, but show some tarnishing in a few spots that a fastidious owner may wish to address.

Interior

Moving inside, it's clear to see that the re-trimmed seats and door cards have transformed the interior of this classic American icon, whilst the new carpets have also done wonders to lift the interior’s appearance.

Due to their recently-recovered nature, the door cards and seats are free from any damage, wear or blemishes, and present in excellent condition throughout, along with the carpets.

The dashboard is free from any cracks or damage, though the HVAC/Air-con controls are missing (included in the boot) whilst the gear selector indicator is inoperable, though all other instruments (fuel, temp, voltage, speed) work as they should.

In the rear, the capacious luggage compartment (or should that be ‘trunk’ in this instance) shows some signs of use over the years, and does not have any sort of carpet/liner.

The upgraded stereo system features two large speakers in the trunk, along with the additional leisure battery that powers the hydraulic suspension also being located in the boot.

Mechanical

Starting with ease and settling into a smooth but characterful idle, the V8 engine at the heart of this Plymouth Fury III appears to be in strong health, happily idling for extended periods of time, dealing with 32-35 degree heat with no issues at all, and starting easily even when hot, with no warning lights or any signs of ill behaviour.

Being super picky, the car does have a tendency to ‘bog down’ if the throttle inputs are anything but feather-light when moving off from a stop, and if the engine is cold this can cause the car to cut out completely - perhaps a slight tune/adjustment to the fuelling might be required to optimise the four-barrel carburettor.

Due to the car’s age, it is exempt from mandatory MoT examinations. The most recent exam took place on 22 February 2015 at 19,027 miles, resulting in a clean first-time pass.

History

Unfortunately, little is known about the car’s history prior to its current ownership, and even the work that has been carried out in recent years does not have an accompanying paper trail, so only the V5 (showing one former UK keeper) a stereo handbook and a set of keys is included with the car.

Summary

Effortlessly cool, attention-grabbing and with all the right noise from the V8 ‘motor’ up front, this customised Plymouth Fury III is certain to be the coolest car wherever you take it, and is one for the American or custom car enthusiast. We estimate that this extremely cool automobile will sell for £16,000-£22,000.
