“ A Pininfarina masterclass, with a real look of Ferrari 250 GTE to it. ”

This captivating car has a timeless elegance to it that will endure beyond the whims of fickle fashion or mercurial taste.

Background

The Peugeot 404 Coupé is a stunning and now very rare marriage of French engineering and Italian design flair.

Designed by Pininfarina and produced from 1962 to 1968, the coupé is easily distinguished from the saloon by its striking, Italian-built body.

The coupé bodies were built and assembled at the coachbuilder’s Turin factory before being transported to Peugeot’s Sochaux works to be fitted with the1.6-litre, 4-cylinder, fuel-injected engine.

That power unit gave the car 85hp and the ability to reach 160 km/h.

These were rare and luxurious cars even when new, with only 17,000 or so ever built.

Overview

The car is being sold as part of a large private collection. It has been on static display as a museum exhibit for a number of years so, consequently, our assessment of it is made purely on the grounds of its appearance.

It will require recommissioning and is sold strictly as seen. The only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery.  In most cases the papers shown are photocopies, unless otherwise stated.

The cars, while located in Greece, may be subject to your local rate of import VAT.

Please contact freddie.woodd@bonhams.com should you have further questions.

The car had the engine stripped down and rebuilt in 1994, with any worn or damaged components replaced.

A few largely cosmetic issues aside, the car seems to us to be in reasonable overall condition and to have retained a good deal of originality and authenticity.

Exterior

The car’s elegant, stylish lines appear to be largely untroubled by any dents, dinks, creases or other aberrations of significance.

The shut lines and panel gaps look even and consistent.

The white paintwork is good in parts, less so in others, with scuffs, scratches and paint chips apparent on most panels, plus some liquid staining here and there.

The front and rear valances have some scuffs and scrapes on them, and the rear bumper is pitted and corroded in a few places.

There are also a few spots of what looks like surface corrosion behind the front bumper, and some splits to the paint on the leading edge of the bonnet.

The wheels, badging and other exterior fixtures and fittings all look to be in reasonable order.

Interior

The interior looks to us to be highly original, authentic and unrestored.

The grey fabric seats are decidedly grubby at the front (less so in the rear), and while the fabric doesn’t appear to be ripped or holed, it is notably baggy and loose in places.

The steering wheel boss is not in situ, the driver’s window winder is lying on the floor, and there is surface rust to be seen on the steering column, the seat incline/recline controls, and elsewhere.

The door cards, carpets and mats look serviceable.

Having neither started nor driven the car, we can’t vouch for the efficacy of any controls, switches, gauges, dials or other mechanical or electrical systems and components.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay looks notably clean, dry, orderly, present and correct.

There are numerous photographs showing the engine disassembled during the restoration.

History

The documentation incudes some copies of Greek documents and photographs taken of the car at the time the engine was stripped down and rebuilt.

There is also a list of the work carried out.

Summary

This captivating car has a timeless elegance to it that will endure beyond the whims of fickle fashion or mercurial taste.

It is rare, beautiful and remarkably original, from what we can see.
