Background

The Morgan Plus Four is one of the most distinctive cars on the roads today and the Malvern factory will be happy to sell you a brand-new car, should that be your thing.

Looks have scarcely changed, though in the last few years there have been alterations under the skin to improve the driving experience and dare we say it, modernise the car. Sacrilege to some.

Let’s rewind to just after World War II when Morgan reintroduced their 4/4 model. This remained in production until 1950 when the larger Plus Four burst onto the motoring scene at the Earl’s Court Motor Show.

Production continued until 1969 and then there was a lull until the model was revived once again in 1985. After yet another pause in 2000, the Plus Four was again on sale from 2005 until 2020 when the ‘all-new’, but still looks the same, Plus Four finally put in an appearance.

The driving experience is somewhat old-school, but there is no doubting the fun to be had behind the wheel of any Morgan Plus Four, whatever the age. They are a proper driver’s car, shorn of modern tech and the fripperies and distractions of the digital age.

Old-fashioned thrills are the order of the day in one of these cars, no matter how humdrum the journey or prosaic the destination, and we ‘re inclined to think they’re all the better for it.

Overview

This splendid car comes to us courtesy of a vendor who is selling it as part of his late mother’s estate.

The lady in question was a GP in Kirkaldy, Fife.

She had long harboured an ambition to own a Morgan and had said that she might buy one for her retirement.

As it turned out, she found this one, immediately took a shine to it and bought it some years before retiring and she then became instantly recognisable as the GP who made house calls in a Morgan Plus Four.

The car was so distinctive (and the only one in Kirkaldy) that people would keep a watchful eye on it when she made her house calls, making sure that no harm came to it.

After a while, she noticed that the number of men requesting house calls had increased.

It soon became apparent that this was because they wanted to look at the car and ask her questions about it.

Always garaged and used regularly but sparingly, the car was serviced and maintained by one of the GP’s patients who just happened to have his own automotive garage business.

This informal arrangement explains the lack of paperwork and history in general.

The Morgan made several trips to continental Europe and, at one time, had a tow bar fitted for bringing a caravan along for the ride.

That must have been quite a sight.

Prior to coming to Bonhams Cars Online the car spent some time with Scotland’s only official Morgan dealer, Revolutions of Fife. They were commissioned by the vendor to undertake all and any mechanical work necessary to get the car into the best possible version of itself. They duly did so, at a cost of around £4,000.

Exterior

The car presents very impressively from every angle and the shut-lines and panel gaps are as crisp and exact as you’d hope and want.

There are no dents, creases, ripples or folds of any importance than we can see.

It has an entirely age and mileage-appropriate number and distribution of stone chips, light scratches and the occasional scuff or two - but nothing significant.

These are mostly found in the usual places – the bonnet, the nose of the car, and around the rear wheel arches.

So, no, it’s not perfect. But it is honest and good, as far as we can tell.

The ‘Indigo Blue’ paintwork has generally held up pretty well.

The wire wheels look to be in fine fettle and the tyres appear to have plenty of life left in them.

The lights, lenses, badging and other exterior fixtures and fittings are all broadly beyond reproach.

So, too, are the blue fabric hood, the side panels and the tonneau cover.

Interior

The ‘Tan’ leather interior complements the blue exterior particularly handsomely, in our opinion, and helps to give the inside of the car a decidedly classy look, feel and ambience.

The seats have a level of patina that accords with the car’s low mileage rather more than its age and, aside from a scuff or two on the seat backs, they appear to be in good order.

There are a few scuffs on the driver’s door card and around the transmission tunnel, no doubt caused by the egress and ingress of feet over the years.

The blue carpets and mats have repelled the vicissitudes of time and use with commendable stoicism.

The simple dashboard is in excellent condition and, as far as we’re aware, all buttons, knobs, switches and dials do what they’re supposed to do.

The roof lining, you won’t be surprised to learn, is following the same script as the rest of the car in terms of quality, condition and preservation.

Mechanical

With just 44,000 miles on the clock this car is really in the first flush of life and, despite being 27 years old, it looks pretty fresh mechanically.

The undersides of the car are as clean and dry as the engine bay and everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

We’ve seen nothing to make us tut or raise an eyebrow.

History

I’m afraid we really don’t have very much to show you here.

As we said earlier, the car was regularly serviced and maintained by a trade professional who was a patient of the then owner, a GP.

We don’t have any paperwork to prove it, nor is there any covering the work done by Revolutions of Fife (although you might be able to contact them directly).

So, all we have is a recent, clear HPI report... and some car keys.

Summary

These are charming, analogue, old-school drivers’ cars.

They are undeniably quirky, invariably fun and always exhilarating to drive.

This one, despite the lack of paperwork, rings no alarm bells for us and was owned for several years by a GP who clearly had a great deal of time, respect and affection for her Morgan Plus Four.

We are happy to offer this car for auction with an estimate in the range of £22,000 - £24,000.
