If you thought the Mercedes-Benz G-Class (formerly known as the G-Wagen, short for Gelandewagen) defines the timeless appeal of modern Mercs, you might want to take a look at the Unimog. Its similarities with the G-Wagen don't just end with cool looks, either. The highly versatile and cleverly engineered truck has proven its worth not just with civilian use but also with the military across the globe.

Since the mid of the last century, there have been 12 model iterations/generations of the vehicle so far, and from the second-generation onwards, it's been made by Mercedes-Benz. The third-generation model, called the Unimog 404, was available for two and a half decades, with over 60,000 units said to be built. Which frankly speaks more about the truck's appeal than anything else. Further reiterating its wide appeal, the Unimog was also sold as a tractor and a light city-focused truck in the past.

Also, it can be specced in a variety of ways, in accordance with the fact that its use as a personal mode of transport would be very different from that of a search and rescue team. Engine options included a gas engine and diesel models from the factory were rare. Having said that, diesel conversions are said to be popular.

Overview

Available for sale is a Unimog 404, complete with a covered deck (canvas top) and ready for its new owners to take it on an expedition. An overlanding trip across the globe? You bet it'd be more than willing to take that offer up! Or maybe some weekend off-road adventures? That's pretty much in the Unimog's comfort zone, too. Plus have you seen the space at the back?!

Exterior

Every Unimog (okay, the majority of them) looks ready to be driven to new territories, especially those unexplored by other mortals. This one is no different. The Unimog 404 was the second iteration of the 'Mog that came with the proud three-pointed star on its face. While the design didn't change much in the succeeding generation, the 404 has the right amount of classic truck appeal without making it look too delicate for off-road adventures.

Interior

It was always going to be basic, the interior, especially considering that it was on sale from the mid-50s to 1980. And while it's a Mercedes-Benz, it's not going to replace the S-Class for rear-seat comfort. But a basic cabin means it doesn't wear as quickly, and as can be witnessed in this example, it's stood the test of time. The rear section is open, which explains the dust, but nothing a quick cleanup won't be able to handle.

Mechanical

The 404 is said to be made with better on-road driving abilities, especially in comparison to the two generations that came before it. While the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a Unimog, from the factory, these usually came with either a 2.2 or a 2.8 gas engine. The ability to power all four wheels was there, too; plus with those looks, it'd be weird to not be able to tackle bad terrain.

The Unimog was adept at that, too. And a lot of credit goes to the portal axles on the truck. This means the axel didn't have to be as low as the wheel center to power them. As any self-respecting off-roader will tell you, this can make a world of difference.

History

The third-generation Unimog 404 was on sale between 1955 and 1980. Regarding the model listed, there isn't any further information available. Odometer shows 40,884 miles.

Summary

It's definitely a truck worth owning, the Unimog. It's a testament to the brand's quality, which often made people refer to its quality as that of a tank. This one most certainly is! At an estimated $8,500 - $12,500, this Unimog 404 is a chance to own an extremely rare machine that's as multifaceted as they come. Plus doesn't it look gorgeous!

PLEASE NOTE: The vehicles from this collection have been sitting for a number of years. Mechanical and running condition of each lot is unknown, and they are being sold 'as is'. This vehicle is being sold on Bill of Sale only.
