Background

All Mercedes fans know and love the W123 which was brought in to replace the W114 in 1975. It was certainly a good move by Mercedes too as the W123 went on to be another roaring success for the company, being the most successful selling model since the W114 with 2.7 million units sold before production ceased in 1986.

Back in a time where things were built to last, the W123 has gained a legendary reputation for taking high mileage without batting an eye. There were regular reports of taxi cabs in Germany reaching half a million to a million miles without major issue.

This is the 280 with the 2.8 litre fuel-injected straight six giving around 182 bhp which would get you from 0-60 briskly, however sporty performance was not the aim here as evidenced by the engine being mounted on small shock absorbers to reduce felt vibration in the cabin.

Overview

The Mercedes was originally purchased by the owner of the Sytner Company Ferrari Maranello in Egham as reported by the seller with the car then being passed through a few similarly high-profile owners before residing with the current seller.

It has just had four brand new period correct Uniroyal Rain Expert 3 tyres as well as a full exhaust system which is shown in the paperwork. It also comes with a spare key as well as a stack of old paper MOTs and tax discs.

The seller has had the car stored for much of the time they have owned it. The last couple of months it has sat on the driveway due to a loss of storage space. Currently with no MOT, the seller reports the car has been given a visual clean bill of health underneath from a MOT tester.

Exterior

Finished in Thistle green over beige leather interior this Mercedes is the quintessential executive luxury saloon. The wheels are in good condition shod in the new Uniroyal tyres with a comfortable looking sidewall profile.

Whilst the car looks to be as solid as you’d expect a quality product from Mercedes to be, the paint work is looking a little tired and there are a few marks here and there that need addressing such as the rear arches, repair panels for which will be included in the sale. The paint on the boot is starting to craze and other sections have been highlighted in the photo gallery.

Despite these aesthetic marks the seller reports the car to be solid underneath, as we’ve tried to show as much in the photo gallery. The seller reports everything to be working around the exterior of the vehicle, including the sunroof which we are informed is watertight.

Interior

Inside the Mercedes, the interior is in good condition with minimal marks or issues to highlight, the odd nick here and there on some high traffic areas but from what we’ve seen, not enough to cause concern or a trip to an upholsterer.

The carpet is in good condition too, with the original owner putting down two mats to protect the carpet underneath. The wood and plastics are good too, with no obvious fading, de-lacquering or damage to highlight.

The seller informs us that the seats would benefit from new foam padding as this would enhance the interior and overall comfort. Steering wheel, gear selector, driver’s bolsters and footplates are all in good condition and suggest the car has had a string of contentious and careful owners. We suspect that very little work will be needed in the cabin here and it will be ready to enjoy for the next owner.

Mechanical

Propelled by a 2.8 litre straight six, giving around 182 bhp when new via a four-speed automatic gearbox. When the current owner picked up the car, which had been sat for a time stored, it needed a new fuel pump, which was fitted there and then.

At the time of the photoshoot, the car started, moved and idled as expected, with the seller reporting no issues with the mechanicals. The car does not have an MOT however, and has not been driven on the road for a while, so we’d recommend the car is transported upon collection. Visually the engine bay looks tidy with little to no signs of damage or corrosion on the structural sections as shown in the photo gallery.

History

The history for the car includes the V5 and a receipt for the aforementioned tyres and exhaust. There are also spares to come with the vehicle including the rear arch repair panels, period spec mud guards, a car cover, interior panel and a new bonnet hinge as the current one catches on the wing if not pushed in whilst opening and closing the bonnet.

Other paperwork includes some old paper MOTs and tax discs, showing it had regular servicing whilst on the road, along with an original manufacturer spare key and even what looks to be a receipt of purchase from what is believed to be the second owner of the car, owner of the Heards Hotel in Brighton from 1986.

Summary

With a little work, this Mercedes 280 E will be a handsome and luxurious example of the marque allowing the new owner to enjoy the classic car owner life in superb comfort and style. It was the current owner’s intention to give the car what it needed in terms of a spruce up and enjoy it to the fullest. With the summer drawing in, now would be the perfect time to guide this car back to its former glory to enjoy some comfortable road trips. We estimate that it will sell for £5,000-£7,000.
