Freddie's review

Freddie Woodd - Consignment Specialist Message Freddie

“ One of the very first production cars in the world to feature a V4 engine mounted at a dramatic 10-degree tilt. ”

This is a fine example of a typically stylish and technologically innovative car from Lancia.

Background

Styled like its Aurelia B10 big brother, Lancia's new small car, the Appia, arrived in 1953.

The Lancia tradition of innovation in automotive technology was exemplified by the Appia's ultra-compact engine, a narrow-angle (10 degrees), 1,089cc V4 whose inclined overhead-valves were set in hemispherical combustion chambers and operated by twin, block-mounted camshafts.

The unitary chassis construction adopted on the pre-war Aprilia was, naturally enough, continued, as was Lancia's traditional sliding-pillar independent front suspension.

'Notchback'-styled Series II cars came with a lengthened wheelbase and more power (up from 38 to 43bhp) while the final (3rd) series boasted further styling revisions and 48bhp.

Complementing the standard Appia saloon, or ‘Berlina’, was a series of limited-edition models produced on a separate chassis and bodied by leading carrozzieri: Pinin Farina (later Pininfarina) being responsible for the coupé, Vignale the cabriolet, and Zagato the GT coupé.

Overview

The car is being sold as part of a large private collection. It has been on static display as a museum exhibit for a number of years so, consequently, our assessment of it is made purely on the grounds of its appearance.

It will require recommissioning and is sold strictly as seen. The only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery.  In most cases the papers shown are photocopies, unless otherwise stated.

The cars, while located in Greece, may be subject to your local rate of import VAT.

Please contact freddie.woodd@bonhams.com should you have further questions.

We understand that the car was the recipient of some restoration work to the body and mechanicals between 2006, when the odometer was recorded as showing 59,185 kms, and June 2010.

Today, the odometer is showing 59,205 kms.

Exterior

The car presents very well from every angle and the distinctive bodywork - with its absence of ‘B’ pillars - appears to be free of any dents, dinks or other aberrations of note.

The shut lines and panel gaps look even and true.

We know that the car was taken back to bare metal and resprayed during its restoration.

There are a few scuffs and paint chips on and around the boot lid.

The chrome-work is good throughout and has just a few marks here and there as evidence of the car’s long life.

The wheels (with their striking red Lancia logos on the hub caps), lights, lenses, badging and other exterior fixtures and fittings all appear to be in very good order.

Interior

We understand the car’s interior to be highly original and authentic, as perhaps supported by a note saying “The upholsteries [sic] are perfect!” in a list of works undertaken during restoration.

Certainly, the blue leather on the seats, front and back, looks to have survived the passage of time with commendable resilience and we’ve seen no holes, splits, cracks or tears anywhere on the upholstery.

The door cards look good.

There is a split to the headlining, plus a few marks and stains.

Aside from one or two scuffs to the trim and the odd scratch on the glove compartment door, the dashboard and surrounds look to be in fine fettle.

Having neither started nor driven the car, we can’t vouch for the efficacy of any controls, switches, gauges, dials or other mechanical or electrical systems and components.

Mechanical

There is a little surface rust around the rim of the engine bay, but everything inside appears clean, dry and in its right and proper place.

History

The documentation is limited to an invoice, a list of works carried out during the restoration and some accompanying photographs of the work in progress.

Summary

This is a fine example of a typically stylish and technologically innovative car from Lancia.

It seems to us to be in very good condition indeed and has a great deal of distinctively Italian charm to it.
