Background
The concept of an all purpose car meets truck can trace its roots back to the Hudson Terraplane Pickup Express of 1934. Studebaker got in on the action with their Coupe Express in 1937. But it was Ford, particularly its Australian division, that really jumped on the idea with the Model T pickup, which started to appear in 1936. The brainchild of Lew Brandt, they were essentially a modified sedan that could do it all. It could work on the farm, head to town on errands and look smart enough to go to church on Sunday. In 1957 Ford launched its new Ranchero which was based on the 2 door Courier station wagon platform. Classified as a coupe utility, it was the first American Ute and competed directly with the Chevrolet El Camino.
