“ Genuine Roush – Low Miles – Low Owners ”

If you’re an American muscle car fan but on the lookout for something that will stand out from the crowd, then this could be high-performance beast you’ve been looking for.

Background

The Mustang’s secret might seem obvious now but the combination of a beautiful, sporting bodyshell - originally available in 1964 as a notchback coupe or a convertible, with the achingly pretty Fastback 2+2 arriving a year later - allied to commonplace mechanical components was something of a revelation at the time.

The Mustang was a stunning vindication of Lee Iacocca’s vision; and it continues today with the seventh generation of Mustang previewing at last September’s Detroit Auto Show for launch later this year. That’s not counting the controversially named battery SUV - oh and maybe we should also skip the 3rd and 4th gen cars which bore a diminishing resemblance to the earlier Mustangs, aside from having two doors.

The fifth generation Mustang debuted in 2005, reintroducing the world to styling themes from the fastback Mustangs of the late sixties. The entry level model had an iron 210 bhp 4.0-litre V6 but the GT packed a 4.6-litre aluminium-block (or should that be “aloominum”) V8 motor pushing 300 bhp.

Of course, for those wishing for something a little bit different from the standard fare then they could always visit Roush Performance Products Inc. Legendary NASCAR man Jack Roush’s tuning concern is famed for its tweaking of the Ford Mustang.

The car on offer below is fitted with a Stage 1 pack, which is a cosmetic bundle in the main. Due to a remap by a previous owner the standard 300bhp has been taken to circa 340bhp together with a Roush Extreme exhaust system for a touch of aural thunder.

Overview

Build No: 05 – 0741 is a genuine Roush Stage 1 Ford Mustang. It comes with three ring binders full of history and paraphernalia proving its authenticity.

Our vendor has owned the car since 2012, adding additional upgrades to its original package. “The first owner purchased it from Tropical Ford, Orlando in 2005 and had it imported into the UK,” he explains. “It’s a manual-transmission example and, as the paperwork proves, is a genuine Roush-built Mustang”.

When new, this car’s Stage 1 package cost an additional $12,026 over the Mustang’s $25,890 purchase price ($38,516 in total, with transportation costs) and included:

PERFORMANCE
•    Rear exit high-performance exhaust system

BODY
•    Front fascia with lower valance fog lamps
•    Rocker panels
•    Rear valances
•    Rear fascia insert
•    Rear wing
•    Front and rear Roush window banners
•    Roush Decklid and Fender emblems
•    Hand-crafted polished rear exit exhaust tips

CHASSIS
•    18-inch Chrome wheels and high-performance tyres

INTERIOR
•    Embroidered floor mats
•    Roush interior emblem

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
•    Roush Mustang Sport leather seating
•    Mustang white face gauge cluster
•    Roush front chin spoiler
•    Roush Mustang interior trim kit
•    Roush Mustang rear quarter window louvers
•    Roush aluminium pedal kit
•    Locking lug nuts with key bag

“I am technically the third owner. However, the car passed from husband to wife, so in reality I’m the second. It gets serviced every year, regardless of mileage covered and costs. I’ve always enjoyed driving and improving the car”.

In terms of the latter, our vendor has added the following:
•    Roush Extreme Back exhaust (original included)
•    20” Mustang Saleen wheels (original wheels included)
•    Roush hydraulic rams hood/bonnet lift (bonnet stay included)
•    Roush fuel cap door (original Redfire cap included)
•    Roush gear shifter knob
•    Pioneer Double Din Radio (original Shaker radio included)
•    Agent 47 door mirrors (originals included)
•    Euro taillights
•    Colour-coded side-pods
•    Ford Performance strut brace and engine cover

It also has that induction kit fitted by a previous owner.

He has used the Mustang purely for pleasure and that has included both showing the car and working with various charities including The Sporting Bears and Smiles for Miles. “It’s a great car for completing charity work and has helped raise a lot of money over the years.

“The Mustang is very responsive and sounds beautiful with the Roush Extreme exhaust, but it can always be returned to the original exhaust, if preferred. It also handles well and is comfortable on both short trips and long journeys.

“It’s been a very reliable car and gets a great deal of attention wherever it goes. The garage always comments on how clean it is when they get her up on the ramps. I’d guess that I’ve lavished about £20k on the car over the years, maintaining and further improving it.

“I’ll state again just how much fun I get out of driving the Mustang and I’ll regret parting with it, but nearing nearly 70 years old I feel it’s the right time to pass her on to someone else for them to enjoy”.

Exterior

If you like your cars with more than of soupcon of visual aggression, then this is one for you. Looming large in anyone’s rear view mirror, this Mustang is enough to set other road users’ knees atremble.

The Redfire coachwork is glorious. It’s a colour that looks subtle in shaded conditions but comes alive once the sun starts to shine, revealing a real depth to its hue.

“I’d say that the exterior is very presentable and in excellent, though not concours, condition,” says our vendor. “There are few signs of wear. She has had some corrective paintwork mainly to the aluminium bonnet to redress the oxidation that they are known for. There is some oxidation around the hood pins and on some of the plastic parts”. As our close-up photographs show, it is minimal and doesn’t detract from the car’s overall superb condition.

Those 20” 7-spoke Saleen alloy wheels fill the car’s muscular wheel arches superbly and again, add to the car’s visual pop. You get an ‘R’ for Roush and Fire Dept badge on the front grille, while the flaming Mustang emblem entices. Further ‘R’ badges are found on each front wing, with a ‘Roush Stage’ one on the boot lid.

Our vendor has fitted an alloy fuel cap, which suits the car’s aesthetic, but the original body-colour fuel flap is also included.

Interior

“The interior is extremely tidy and shows very little wear,” says our seller. It is, and there’s plenty of visual zing in here, as well. The Red door inserts ping against the rest of the plastic door cards, with the matching two-tone leather sports seats also adding to party. The latter bear Jack Roush signatures, with further Roush insignia to be found elsewhere including on one of the dashboard’s carbon fibre panels and on the Black piped Red carpet mats.

The front seats have started to develop a pleasant patina, whilst those in the rear look entirely unmarked. Up front, the steering wheel is man’s man thick and is aided and abetted by a very tactile gear knob. The white-faced Roush instrument cluster is also very pleasing and further lifts the interior environment. You’ll find the uprated Pioneer Double Din stereo system in-situ, with the original also supplied.

Popping the trunk reveals a clean boot (see what I did there?) with a full tool kit located on its underside. If you fancy showing the car in future, you’ll be pleased to know that it comes with a Roush Performance Build plaque and stand, ready and waiting.

Mechanical

Okay, first things first. When Dave says that this car has been well looked after then you can take that at face value… and then some. Its service history is simply superlative with the Scheduled Maintenance Booklet in its history file showing the following service stamps:

•    5000-mile service (4892 miles), 25/06/08 – D Cockell Engineering

•    10,000-mile service (10,104 miles), 01/07/10 – D Cockell Engineering

•    15,000-mile service (15,226 miles), 02/10/11 – D Cockell Engineering

•    20,000-mile service (21,510 miles), 02/09/13 – Mill Road Garage

•    25,000-mile service (23,519 miles), 16/07/14 – Golden Hill Park

•    30,000-mile service (24,693 miles), 29/06/15 – Golden Hill Park

•    35,000-mile service (26,607 miles), 24/06/16 – Mill Road Garage

•    40,000-mile service (28,519 miles), 02/12/17 – Somerton Performance & Prestige Centre Ltd

•    45,000-mile service (29,385 miles), 07/03/19 – Somerton Performance & Prestige Centre Ltd

•    50,000-mile service (30,195 miles), 20/12/20 – Somerton Performance & Prestige Centre Ltd

•    55,000-mile service (30,293 miles), 08/12/21 – Somerton Performance & Prestige Centre Ltd

•    60,000-mile service (30,396 miles), 09/12/22 – Somerton Performance & Prestige Centre Ltd

•    65,000-mile service (30,452 miles), 14/12/23 – Somerton Performance & Prestige Centre Ltd

•    65,000-mile service (30,564 miles), 25/02/25 – T.S.M.

As you can see, up until the 20k mile mark it followed the prescribed service intervals. However, after that it’s been serviced above and beyond those requirements to ensure that it remains in tip-top driving condition.

Right, we’ve dealt with that important preliminary. So, how does the V8 sound? 2mins 55secs into our Video Review above reveals the Extreme exhaust system’s snap, crackle and overrun pop. Oh. Yes. Mamma.

On the road, it delivers everything that its aggressive visuals promise. It’s been beautifully looked after and that comes through loud and clear in terms of how it drives.

Pop the hood and you’ll find an alluring looking and entirely spotless engine bay. The Other Photos section of our Photo Gallery shows the underside to be in nice, clean condition.

History

In terms of history, this car comes with a superlative and comprehensive package. There are three ring binders crammed with information including Work Done/Parts Bought/Treats Given; Sales Brochures/Roush Brochures; and Sales Invoice/Registration Docs/Retention Certs/MOTs/Tax Discs/USA Purchase/Import History. It doesn’t get any better.

The Mustang’s V5c registration document is present, confirming three owners from new and the car’s date of first UK registration as 01/07/2005, as is a recent online vehicle check indicating no known issues with outstanding finance, theft, having been written off or importation/exportation.

The car’s original Ford wallet is also present and in it you will find all the car’s original owner’s booklets, as well as a Roush Performance Owner’s Manual and invoice for the Stage 1 package.

It’s worth taking your time to electronically leaf your way through the documentation section of our Photographic Gallery, as this demonstrates the sheer breadth of this car’s superlative history file.

Please visit the documents section of the gallery of this listing where you will find photos to support our claim that this Ford Mustang is a genuine Roush-tuned example and has been maintained well ahead of the suggested service schedule and to a first-class standard.

Summary

This is a stunning example of a genuine Roush-built Stage 1, manual-transmission Ford Mustang. It comes with a simply superb history file that includes all invoices from new, including the original build spec, and a pretty much perfect R005HDH registration plate.

Vendor Dave has continued to improve the vehicle with a host of upgrades, all of which are reversible as the Mustang comes with all original parts included.

If you’re an American muscle car fan but on the lookout for something that will stand out from the crowd, then this could be high-performance beast you’ve been looking for.

We think that this fine upstanding Mustang will fetch somewhere between £20,000 and £30,000, which surely isn’t a lot when you consider both the horses on tap and intimidating visual package on offer.

If you’re ready to take a walk on the wild side, then this Roush Mustang is able, willing and ready to go.
