Background
For those of us not fortunate enough to live in alpine regions of Europe, or the wider world, there’s little need for a versatile go anywhere vehicle. Even less need if said car is built around a modest little city runaround. However, in the aforementioned regions, there has been one stalwart mechanical mountain goat that’s seen sterling service for more than 40 years, the Fiat Panda 4x4. This remarkable little machine has been the sweetheart of the vineyard or forestry worker and a faithful companion to many a mountain-top hotel or ski lodge.
Conceived in 1983, the Panda 4x4 was a joint venture between FIAT and Austrian off-road legends Steyr-Puch. When the route gets rough, the unlikely little Fiat swaps from front- to four-wheel drive with the heave of a lever, although the lack of a central differential does mean you have to take things easy, only deploying all driven wheels on low grip surfaces. The combination of lightweight and four-wheel drive has proved hugely popular, with FIAT shifting over 800k Panda 4x4s of all generations.
