Freddie's review

Freddie Woodd - Consignment Specialist Message Freddie

“ As a 3rd Series car, it has the later and more useable 5-speed gearbox. ”

This seems to us to be a highly original and authentic example of a rare and very stylish 124 Sport Coupé.

Background

First introduced in 1967 and based on the 124 saloon's floor pan and running gear, the attractively-styled four-seater Coupé would prove an outstanding success for Fiat with over 270,000 being sold before production ended in 1975.

Launched in two-headlamp form with a 1.4-litre twin-cam engine, the model was enlarged to 1.6 litres in 1969, gaining a four-lamp front end at the same time.

And what an engine it is; the Fiat twin-cam engine was designed by ex-Ferrari engineer Aurelio Lampredi and it’s an absolute gem that features a double-overhead camshaft, an aluminium head, and a range of power outputs from 89bhp to 133bhp.

New 1.6- and 1.8-litre power units were introduced in 1972, examples equipped with the latter being capable of nudging 180km/h.

Four-wheel disc brakes were part of the package from the outset and all but a few home-market cars came with five-speed gearboxes.

Overview

The car is being sold as part of a large private collection. It has been on static display as a museum exhibit for a number of years so, consequently, our assessment of it is made purely on the grounds of its appearance.

It will require recommissioning and is sold strictly as seen. The only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery.  In most cases the papers shown are photocopies, unless otherwise stated.

The cars, while located in Greece, may be subject to your local rate of import VAT.

Please contact freddie.woodd@bonhams.com should you have further questions.

We understand that this car was delivered new to its first owner in Milan in August 1973.

It has the desirable combination of the larger 1800cc engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

It appears to be in very reasonable, unrestored, original condition, with only a few cosmetic issues to address in a few places.

Exterior

The stylish and understated lines of this car are not compromised by any dinks, dents or creases that we can see, and the blue paintwork has survived the passage of time with commendable stoicism - although there are some issues to consider.

There is some foxing and pitting on the chrome-work on the front and rear bumpers, plus a little of what appears to be surface rust on the trim around the front grille.

We can see a fairly standard number and distribution of stone chips, scuffs and scratches dotted around the car in the usual places.

There is bubbling under the paint on the wheels.

The lights, lenses, badging and other exterior fixtures and fittings look to be intact and in reasonable condition.

Interior

The interior is rather grimy and scruffy but is, we think, intact and therefore amenable to refurbishment.

The grey velour fabric on the seats, front and rear, appears to be free of any notable rips or tears but is rather baggy.

The dashboard and door cards look to have avoided cracking or fading. We can see some splits to the gear lever gaiter.

The capacious boot seems to be in decent order.

Having neither started nor driven the car, we can’t vouch for the efficacy of any controls, switches, gauges, dials or other mechanical or electrical systems and components.

Mechanical

The engine bay is rather grubby but everything appears to be present, correct, and in its right and proper place.

History

The car comes with copies of some Greek documents, a hand-written note describing its early provenance, and a small selection of photographs.

Summary

This seems to us to be a highly original and authentic example of a rare and very stylish 124 Sport Coupé.

That it comes with the 1800cc engine and 5-speed gearbox is a welcome and attractive bonus.
