Background
First introduced in 1967 and based on the 124 saloon's floor pan and running gear, the attractively-styled four-seater Coupé would prove an outstanding success for Fiat with over 270,000 being sold before production ended in 1975.
Launched in two-headlamp form with a 1.4-litre twin-cam engine, the model was enlarged to 1.6 litres in 1969, gaining a four-lamp front end at the same time.
And what an engine it is; the Fiat twin-cam engine was designed by ex-Ferrari engineer Aurelio Lampredi and it’s an absolute gem that features a double-overhead camshaft, an aluminium head, and a range of power outputs from 89bhp to 133bhp.
New 1.6- and 1.8-litre power units were introduced in 1972, examples equipped with the latter being capable of nudging 180km/h.
Four-wheel disc brakes were part of the package from the outset and all but a few home-market cars came with five-speed gearboxes.
