“ An SUV to rival the 911. Hardly surprising Porsche made it then! ”

7-Speed PDK | 4WD with service history and mileage verification certificate. ULEZ & CAZ compliant.

Background

If you categorize a car manufacturer by volume, Porsche is no longer a sportscar maker thanks to the massive number of SUVs it sells.

And while the Cayenne was the German firm’s best-selling model in 2024 with 103,000 sold worldwide, the mighty Macan wasn’t far behind with 101,000.

There’s a very good reason for that, and that reason is the Macan is simply brilliant: SUVs have always delivered practicality, but Porsche showed it could bring fun and performance to the equation.

Plus, of course, luxury.

NB: The Macan, which first broke cover in 2014, was originally slated to be called the Cajun, a combination of ‘Cayenne’ and ‘Junior’. However, proving the old marketing adage that you’ve failed if you have to explain a name, Porsche rechristened the production model the Macan.

Overview

Finished in Carrera White Metallic with a Garnet Red leather interior, ‘LA15 XCV’ is a 2015 Porsche Macan Turbo that’s fitted with the 3.6-litre V6 twin-turbo engine, which feeds its prodigious 394bhp and 405lb.ft of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed PDK gearbox, a engineering tour de force that allows it to reach 62mph in under five seconds.

Unimpressed? How about the fact you’ll reach 100mph in under eleven seconds on your way to a top speed of 165mph?

And despite this towering performance, Autocar magazine suggest that 30mpg should be very achievable. Surprisingly, it’s also ULEZ and CAZ compliant, and road tax is just £360 per year.

This example spent its first ten years in Japan, a country that demonstrates how well cars can age when they’re treated properly – and not exposed to road salt.

This one is no exception; beautifully curated, completely unmodified, and showing just 46,000 miles on the odometer, it arrived here at the end of last year.

The seller then prepared it for sale, a comprehensive process that included changing key items like the numberplate plinths and speedometer face to UK versions, so it’s exactly as you’d expect – bar the rust, of course.

Exterior

The seller tells us that the panels and Carrera White Metallic paintwork are all original, which is further proof of how carefully it’s been looked after because it’s almost flawless; if this was on a Porsche dealer forecourt on a 22-plate you’d still be impressed.

The shutlines could have been drawn on with a thin-tipped Sharpie, the panel alignment is impeccable, the flanks are free of ripples and dinks, all the apertures are clean, and even vulnerable areas like the four corners and the mirrors cases are free of marks.

The wheels continue the monochrome colour scheme with a silver and black finish and matching centre caps – and yet, behind them, you can catch a glimpse of red brake calipers, a reminder of the Macan Turbo’s performance credentials.

And what wheels they are! Not only are the 20-inch RS Spyder Design alloy wheels a terrific design, all four are in a good condition with no dinks, scrapes, or other kerbing damage, which is not something we get to write very often when a wheel is fitted with rubber-band tyres like this.

And neither Porsche nor the owner has skimped here; with the 295/40R20 rears having been made in 2023, and the front 265/45R20s dating to 2021, all four are matching Michelin Latitude Tour HP.

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly.

Apart from light stonechips, the only cosmetic issues are condensation in the headlamps and slight chemical burns to the chrome window trims and roof rails.

Interior

The Garnet Red leather interior is joined by Porsche’s Aluminium Package, an extra-cost option that brings a hint of glint to the party; it’s winning combination, bright and elegant without even a hint of vulgarity.

Comfortable and practical too, with the GTS-style front sport seats being heated as well as electrically adjustable no fewer than twelve ways. The condition of the rear seat is every bit as good, and it also offers a useful 40/20/40 split option.

The Alcantara door cards, which feature a swoop of red leather and Bose speakers, are in a very good condition with no damage, and the red theme continues with beautifully neat contrast stitching across the dashboard.

The Alcantara headlining is free of drooping or damage. The same material is used for the armrest, along with soft-touch plastics throughout and a fat-rimmed, leather-covered steering wheel; the Macan is as tactile as it is comprehensively equipped.

The Clarion touchscreen infotainment system, which plays through the Bose speakers we mentioned, has been left in situ, leaving it up to the car’s new owner to decide whether to spend a couple of hundred pounds on something with Apple CarPlay or spend even less on a secondhand Porsche original.

Climate control is three-zone and icy cold, and other goodies include a multifunction steering wheel, automatic Bi-Xenon headlamps with washers, automatic wipers, LED rear lights, electric door mirrors with memory function, keyless entry and start, remote central locking, cruise control, power tailgate, heat-insulating privacy glass, and front and rear cupholders.

A reversing camera supplements front and rear parking sensors, and it even boasts an ‘OFF ROAD” button should you want to play in the mud and snow – and the buttons are physical things you press, rather than a touchscreen you have to scroll through. Score another one for the older guys, huh?

The boot sill is protected by a stainless-steel plate that even still has its protective plastic film on it, and the carpets throughout the cabin and boot are almost perfect with only a small stain in the boot.

The luggage area contains a discreet Bose subwoofer plus a natty elasticated netting pocket that slides up and down on metal rails to adjust its height.

As for its overall condition, it’s exactly as you’d expect to see in a vehicle that done as few miles and been as well looked after as this one with little more than modest creasing to the outer edges of the front seats.

All the electrics work as they should too, and a new battery has been fitted only recently.

Mechanical

The 3.6-litre, turbocharged V6 engine fires up cleanly, with a hot-rod exhaust note when it’s cold, something you may enjoy more than your neighbours.

The engine bay is in a lovely condition being as clean and neatly presented as everything else, and the only changes to the factory finish appear to be a series of stickers for servicing over the years, and who could moan about that?

(These are 29.07.2023 and 60,940 kms, 07.09.2021 and 48,652 kms, and 25.06.2020 and 41,888 kms plus others at 67,827 kms and 55,487 kms.)

The condition of the underside is every bit as good as you’d expect to find on a car that spent its first decade in Japan. In fact, it probably still hasn’t seen salt, which explains why everything, even the fasteners, are free of rust.

History

So, it won’t surprise you to learn that the Porsche’s first UK MoT, which is valid until October 2026, was issued without any advisories.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear bar the marker for being an imported car and it comes with two keys.

Unusually, we’re told it also comes with its service history from Japan, something that’s usually snaffled at the border as the car is exported.

Speaking of which, it’s also got the export certificate that guarantees the mileage.

Summary

Autocar’s guide to buying a secondhand Macan is worth quoting at length:

“The engine impresses, but it’s the standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that really shows its class. It is fast, smooth and intuitive and has the ability to perfectly match revs on downshifts.

The defining aspect of the Macan Turbo, however, is its handling … this SUV delivers an unusually high level of interaction and exceptional dynamic qualities.

You can fling the Macan Turbo down a back road at a decent clip and it responds beautifully …The overall agility and poise is outstanding for a car of this weight.

And how much is this pitch-perfect family SUV likely to set you back?

We suspect the winning bidder will have to write out a cheque for somewhere between £24,000 and £27,000, which feels like a bit of a bargain given the condition and performance you’ll be getting in return.
