Background

The military needed a bigger truck to transport its troops, and the Dodge WC63 became an innovative solution to that requirement. The company didn't need to go back to the drawing board to produce it. It was a longer version of the preceding Dodge WC51, came in a 6x6 layout, and made the most of shared components, which were strengthened for the added load. The difference between the WC62 and WC63 was the inclusion of a winch in the latter.

Overview

The Dodge 6x6 featured here is the WC63 complete with a front-mounted winch. We don't know what year it was built, but we do know they stopped making them in 1945.

As can be seen in the photos, the WC63 looks a fair bit bigger and more imposing than the WC51, which does add to its appearance. But with a shared platform, it's not as challenging to drive as a big truck, and that for many collectors, will come as a huge benefit of owning the WC63.

The truck used to come with a 92 hp straight-six engine and switchable six-wheel drive, so it's expected to be a fairly usable piece of kit even now.

Exterior

The biggest draw in terms of appearance for the WC63 is the 'big truck' looks. These troop carriers used to come with a foldable canvas top, and some of the exterior panels were shared with the preceding models. But it's the big bumpers, a winch mounted at the middle, and the presence of six wheels that make this one-and-a-half-ton truck even more butch.

Interior

The cabin design and layout of the WC63 are unexpectedly simple. The instrument panel consists of a large speedometer flanked by unevenly distributed smaller units on either side. A bunch of buttons underneath and that's largely it. Its large steering wheel is complemented by small levers for the 6x6 drivetrain and a significantly taller gear stick. The cabin has two frontal seats in place whereas the rear has two longitudinal non-cushioned benches.

Mechanical

With mechanicals shared with the WC51 (Dodge's 3/4 ton truck), the WC62 and WC63 benefitted from a longer wheelbase and body, a 6x6 drivetrain, strengthened components, etc. The 92 hp straight-six engine was connected to a four-speed gearbox and a 2-speed transfer case. As mentioned earlier, the Dodge WC63 also got a winch.

History

The WC63 was a part of Dodge's military portfolio for WWII and beyond. No other info about the truck presented here is available. Odometer shows 14,839 miles.

Summary

The biggest draw for the WC63 is the power and abilities of a 6x6 truck but without the hassles of driving a large vehicle. As a classic in its original state, one restored to perfection, or even as a 'resto mod', the WC63 is bound to be appreciated by many classic truck lovers. Estimated $3,000 - $6,000.

PLEASE NOTE: The vehicles from this collection have been sitting for a number of years. Mechanical and running condition of each lot is unknown, and they are being sold 'as is'. This vehicle is being sold on Bill of Sale only.
