Background
Founded in Modena, Italy in 1959, De Tomaso Automobili is an Italian vehicle manufacturer the produced cars from 1959 to 2004. Alejandro De Tomaso, the company’s founder, was originally born in Argentina. The De Tomaso logo sports blue and white stripes meant to resemble the Argentinian flag, and the symbol within the logo is the cattle branding symbol for the Ceballos estate where Mr. De Tomaso grew up. De Tomaso built several beloved sports cars during their peak including the Pantera, Mangusta, and others like today’s model, the Deauville. The most popular De Tomaso models went on to become cult classics with many people obsessed over the idea of a sports car with Italian styling mated to an American V8. Unfortunately, De Tomaso went into liquidation in 2004, then was sold in 2009. When the new owner was arrested on allegations of misuse of funds, the business went up for sale again in 2012. In 2015, an Italian bankruptcy court approved the sale to a company in China who intended to produce cars solely for the Chinese market bearing the De Tomaso name.
