“ Fantastic Example - Rare Weismann Hard Top ”

The W124/A124-series is renowned for being almost indestructible, something this beautifully curated E320 Cabriolet demonstrates: Now three decades old, if we were to tell you it was a third of its age, we think you’d believe us – and if you continue to treat it well, you’ll be fending them off when the time comes for you to pass it on too.

Background

The Mercedes W124 is legendary for its bulletproof engineering, bank-vault construction and no-nonsense reliability: the cars might not be especially sporting or economical to drive but they will plod along quite happily on the merest sniff of an oily rag once a year.

But, that staid exterior hides a surprisingly sophisticated chassis: the entire W124 range is far more aerodynamic than its shape would have you believe and the multilink rear suspension is reliable, refined and gives a good ride and impressive handling.

The 217bhp inline-six petrol engine we are looking at in this fabulous cabriolet is reliable, powerful, and refined, and while it’s true that the four-speed automatic gearbox does rather take the edge off the car’s performance (0-62mph in 8.3 seconds), this example is the perfect way to indulge your inner petrolhead without having to worry unnecessarily about speed cameras and half-hidden ‘road safety partnership’ vans.

And, with its heated seats, powerful air-conditioning and one of the best folding roofs in the business, this could be the most versatile (semi-)sportscar you’ll ever own.

Overview

N31 RPD’s previous owner intended his A124 E320 Sportline Cabriolet to be his forever car – and ploughed a considerable amount of money into it as a result.

And he picked well; built in 1995 and fitted with a 3.2-litre straight-six engine and an automatic gearbox, it’s finished in the rare colour scheme of Imperial Red with a Beige leather interior.

It’s a factory Sportline model too, which brings lowered and stiffened suspension, a smaller steering wheel, and various other changes to the party.

Even better, this one comes equipped with a Weismann hard-top, an uber-rare period accessory. How rare? Well, we understand the last one that came up on eBay sold for £3,500 – five years ago.

And yet things changed for the previous owner, and he asked us to sell it for him back in May 2024.

The winning bidder tells us that he’s has really enjoyed the past eighteen months: “It’s never let me down,” and he’s only selling it because he’s got other cars he wants to tick off his Bucket List.

Exterior

You may have heard of Garage Classico, an Old School firm run by “an Italian gentleman who does everything the old-fashioned way with multiple hammers and formers”, and whose no-compromise approach led the previous owner to commission them to sort out the A124’s coachwork.

The new metal they let in was done with an unusually deft touch, as the shutlines and panel alignment are as good now as they were when the car rolled out of the factory 30 years ago.

Imperial Red (colour code 582U) is an unusual colour, and one that suits the E320’s lines unusually well; staid colours might be the safe choice, but who doesn’t love a splash of colour on their sportscar?

The paint itself is still in great shape, with a wonderful shine and no significant flaws bar some microblisters to the boot lid. The underlying panels still run true, with no dents, dinks or ripples to spoil the reflections they cast.

He also arranged for d:class to install a new black Sonnenland soft-top with a beige brocade headlining, a typically thoughtful touch that illustrates how carefully considered the refresh was.

Of course, the soft-top still rises and falls as it should, and it is also free of rips, tears, or other damage. It also incorporates a proper glass rear window with a heating element.

As for the Weismann hard-top we enthused about, enthusiasts will know how rare these are – and how valuable. The seller put the Mercedes on Autotrader to gauge the level of interest but quickly withdrew it: “I must have had a hundred calls just about the hard-top,” he despaired.

We aren’t surprised at the level of interest because it gives the convertible the elegance and weatherproofing of a coupé, turning the A124 into all the car you’ll ever need.

The Mercedes also sits on a set of three 225/45 R17 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, with the offside rear being a later Michelin Pilot Sport 5. They are fitted to refurbished and original AMG wheels – and as you’ll have guessed by now, some of that investment went on making sure the spare wheel and tyres matched the rest.

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you a shortcut into their attitude towards maintenance.

As for flaws, the rear numberplate panel to the boot lid fell off when it was being delivered and has been stuck on with double-sided tape, we suggest a proper fix before it happens again. The nearside headlamp wiper blade also needs replacing.

Interior

The Beige leather front seats (trim code 265) benefit from the expensive heated seat option (code 873). Used alongside the powerful heater and wind deflector (code 283), the Mercedes’ cabin remains warm enough for you to enjoy al fresco motoring throughout all four seasons – and if you’ve never driven a convertible in the snow then you’ve one of life’s great pleasures ahead of you.

The first owner clearly didn’t stint because you’ve also got air-conditioning (option code 580), a full suite of walnut trim including the centre console, door caps, steering wheel (option code 289), and armrest (option code 570) – and the latter has a tambour door to hide the precious things you’ll stash in the cubbybox beneath.

The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable, and all four seats are in a very good condition following some minor restorative work by d:class in October 2019. The rear headrests, which are built into the rollover bar, can be raised and lowered at the touch of a button.

Clever, huh?

Other options include four electric windows, electric door mirrors, and a Sportline gearknob for the switchable automatic gearbox.

There’s a leather headlining for the Weismann hard-top too, plus a heated glass rear window and two reading lamps, one in either C-pillar. Ruched leather on the door cards and rear-quarter panels add yet further period charm.

A new Pioneer radio with flip-out screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto was fitted in July 2021.

The boot is as nicely finished as everything else, and it plays host to an indoor car cover, warning triangle, first aid kit, umbrella, and an anti-theft device in addition to the tool kit and a spare wheel whose tyre still has the sticker on it.

As for flaws, the lacquer on the tambour door has seen better days, the plastic screen covering the instrument cluster has gone cloudy, and the spare wheel well and nearside front footwell are developing a thin patina of rust.

If you peer really closely you can also see the marks where something like a mobile phone cradle was fitted to the passenger’s side of the centre console.

  • 22.04.2021 and 114,496 miles – service by Lymington Motors including gearbox oil and filter plus new brake pipes and miscellaneous work at a cost of more than £2,200
  • 09.07.2021 and 114,675 miles – holiday check by Lymington Motors

Other recent major bills include one for £3,850 in September 2021 for Lymington Motors to replace the notoriously biodegradable engine bay wiring loom along with some other bits and bobs.

As the video demonstrates, the inline-six starts easily, bursting into life almost imperceptibly. It shows very good oil pressure too, and there are no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard.

It also idles and revs nicely, with the model’s distinctive cruise-liner-like hum. It has an attractive yet subtle exhaust note too, especially with the roof down.

If you were to detail the engine bay few would accuse you of being overly fussy; besides, a car like this attracts a lot of attention and you will inevitably be asked to pop the bonnet.

The underside is a mix of red paint and underseal, and given how good the rest of the vehicle is – and how there is some minor rust breaking out inside – you’ll want to get it professionally cleaned, treated, and re-protected.

History

The E320’s MoT, which is valid until April 2026, was issued with no advisories.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear, the V5 registration document shows just four previous keepers, and the Mercedes-Benz wallet contains the full book pack, including the very well-stamped service history booklet that backs up the extensive invoices that are on file.

Summary

The W124/A124-series is renowned for being almost indestructible, something this beautifully curated E320 Cabriolet demonstrates: Now three decades old, if we were to tell you it was a third of its age, we think you’d believe us – and if you continue to treat it well, you’ll be fending them off when the time comes for you to pass it on too.

Nonetheless, we suspect it’s going to be more affordable than you might think; despite its many great qualities, we estimate it will sell for somewhere between £12,000 and £16,000, which is in the ballpark of what the seller paid for it back in 2024.

Despite its status as a luxury sportscar, the W124 can be surprisingly cheap to buy and run.

Even better, the seller has sufficient faith in his car to offer it with no reserve, trusting the market will value it fairly.

So, it’ll be going to a new home as soon as the first bid has been placed, so why not have a flutter and see what happens?
