Background

The E30 M3 was always going to be a hard act to follow. From 1992 to 1999, BMW’s Motorsport division built the second generation of the M3, based of course on the E36. The challenge was to broaden the car’s appeal but without losing the motorsport DNA in the process. We think they succeeded.

However, the clever engineers from the ‘M’ division had another ace up their sleeves and in 1995 they created a more high-performance model, known as the M3 GT. Only 356 M3 GT’s were made and they were destined for mainland Europe. BMW never offered a right-hand drive GT but instead offered 50 ‘M3 mit GT-Optik’ cars to the UK which was the best export market for the M3.

Under the bonnet sat a suitably modified engine, with power up to 295bhp. The unit is seen by many as a masterpiece in engine building. Let off the leash, the M3 GT was timed at 5.9 seconds for the 0-62mph sprint.

Only one colour was available, British Racing Green, making the car easily identifiable. Bespoke spoilers front and rear along with aerodynamically optimized mirrors and M double-spoke aluminium alloys completed the look.

The M3 GT’s sprint qualities still have the ability to thrill drivers today, that normally aspirated 6-cylinder engine offering a unique driving feel that is missing from the latest generation of performance cars. The lack of electronic driver assistance aids focuses the mind too. Man and machine in perfect harmony perhaps..

Overview

Limited edition BMWs are always a wonderful thing to behold, and the E36 M3 GT is no different. Straddling an age where timeless beloved styling was still being used and more modern technology and levels of refinement were being introduced, the E36 M3 GT is a true modern classic.

This car was originally sold into the German Domestic Market and as such is a left-hand drive vehicle, it spent 6 years in the homeland before being exported to the shores of the UK. From 2001 - 2007 the M3 was lovingly cared for by two owners, being regularly maintained and enjoyed until it was sold to the second UK owner who is also the current keeper. From 2007 to the present day, the car was kept off the road in silent slumber meaning it is quite the mini time capsule in terms of the normal levels of wear and tear regular driving can place upon a car.

It now represents a fantastic opportunity to put the car back into regular use and enjoy the superb package from BMW or to add to a collection with occasional usage. Either way we’d love to see this car back being used in anger and inspiring a future generation of classic BMW enthusiasts.

Exterior

The exterior of the M3 is wonderful, the British racing green paintwork perfectly highlighting the boxy, angular styling of the 90’s. The E36 had some big shoes to fill following the E30, but the design has aged beautifully and the E36 enjoys a devoted fan base and aftermarket support system with good examples increasing in price year on year.

With this car being SORN for the past 15 years, the car has not been subjected to the usual amount of wear and tear sat in its lockup as it would being used and abused out on the road. That means that the bodywork is in great condition with very little areas of concern to highlight. There may be the odd scuff here and there but it is far less than the usual wear and tear you’d expect from a car this age, the 15 year hibernation will have preserved the car well.

Styling cues around the M3 give a subtle but purposeful nod to the performance variant from BMW, with the rear boot spoiler, Ganador mirrors and staggered style 24, 17” polished alloys all hinting to the power this car has over the standard model. It was relatively understated until you fire up that S50 at which point it becomes obvious the potential the car has.

Interior

The car is a left-hand drive (like all true GT's) being a German import, with the interior half leather and half Alcantara. The ominously named Vader seats are figure hugging and supportive, ready to hold you in place when the need for speed strikes. The interior trim is mainly black and green with the centre console and upper dash cover having a yellow/green coloured carbon fibre weave effect with red highlight.

The interior is well finished and retains a modern/classic level of refinement to the fixtures and fittings. The familiar BMW user interface and ergonomic packaging, regarded very highly by fans the world over is present in the E36 with all switch gear falling easily to hand.

Still useable today, the E36’s interior is like that of any E36 coupe of the generation so space for four adults and their luggage is easily as achievable as embarrassing much more expensive machinery on the track.

Mechanical

We always include as many photos of the underneath of the car as we can and we’ve done the same here. The underside looks to be in good condition with the vast majority of the underseal still present. There are only some very minor areas of what looks to be surface corrosion, which we’d imagine would be of little concern.

In the engine bay, everything looks presentable too with the S50 straight six power plant sitting proud with silent menace, ready to bark into life. Aside from some small sections of paint flaking off the edges of the cam covers, everything else in the bay looks to be in good condition including wiring, plastics and rubbers.

History

The M3 has a stack of paperwork including the original German owner’s manual and service book, there is some official paperwork from the car’s time in Germany but any invoices or such are absent from the time before the car was imported into the UK. The UK paperwork from the time of its import till 2007 when the car was declared SORN is plentiful and presumed to be complete.

Starting with the service book, with the car first being registered on 29th June 1995. There are stamps for the following dates and mileage, bearing in mind that the car was on a SORN from 2007 till now:

- 17/02/06 – 150,905 km

- 19/11/20 - 170,180 km

Moving on from the service stamps to the invoices for the car, it shows the car has had plenty of regular maintenance work replacing usual wear and tear items and attending to any small issues the car might have had from its life in Germany. A summary of the work completed is given below.

Summary

The E36 M3 GT is one of the most desirable from BMW’s back catalogue and this example represents a fantastic opportunity to obtain one in such great condition. Hidden away for 15 years suggests that the clock was slowed to a near halt on the wear and tear of major components so its likely that the condition of the entirety of the car is 5 years younger than ones that have been in regular use.

This car is sure to initiate smiles from the faces of all the petrolheads that see it and we can imagine that the car lives up to its hype. The E36 M3 GT surely deserves its place on the list of top BMW limited editions.

This particular BMW M3 GT is valued between £45,000 - £55,000.
