Background

The E30 M3 was always going to be a hard act to follow. From 1992 to 1999, BMW’s Motorsport division built the second generation of the M3, based of course on the E36. The challenge was to broaden the car’s appeal but without losing the motorsport DNA in the process. We think they succeeded.

However, the clever engineers from the ‘M’ division had another ace up their sleeves and in 1995 they created a more high-performance model, known as the M3 GT. Only 406 were produced, with the UK receiving just 50 cars in right-hand drive. From our research, it would appear the car was built as a homologation model for the FIA GT Series, Division II and the IMSA GT Series…

Under the bonnet sat a suitably modified engine, with power up to 295bhp. The unit is seen by many as a masterpiece in engine building. Let off the leash, the M3 GT was timed at 5.9 seconds for the 0-62mph sprint.

Only one colour was available, British Racing Green, making the car easily identifiable. Bespoke spoilers front and rear along with aerodynamically optimized mirrors and M double-spoke aluminium alloys completed the look.

The M3 GT’s sprint qualities still have the ability to thrill drivers today, that normally aspirated 6-cylinder engine offering a unique driving feel that is missing from the latest generation of performance cars. The lack of electronic driver assistance aids focuses the mind too. Man and machine in perfect harmony perhaps..

Overview

We are always delighted to sell classic cars that have been in the care of an owner for a long period of time. That is most definitely the case here as our seller acquired this lovely M3 GT way back in 2005. It is number 45 of the 50 sent to the UK.

Despite being a rare and eminently collectable car, he has used the car extensively during that time, covering over 50,000 miles. A garage queen it most certainly was not!

As well as a lot of exciting road trips, our seller is a track day enthusiast and has campaigned the car at many of the UK’s leading circuits. He reports that the car has always attracted a huge amount of attention as you can imagine, with fellow racing enthusiasts keen to give the car the once over and find out more.

Being the fastidious type, our seller has spared no expense to ensure the car has always been in tip top condition. After all, you don’t want a mechanical malfunction whilst exploring the car’s outer limits on a track.

In the extensive paperwork accompanying this car you will see, amongst others, an invoice for a little over £9,000 for an extensive engine rebuild, carried out in 2019 by specialists JC Racing in Thirsk.

As well as keeping on top of the oily parts, our seller has also maintained the bodywork to an exacting standard. This year alone over £13,000 has been spent.

With advancing years and our seller now attending less track days, he has decided that the time has come to let someone else take over custodianship of the very special car. It is his hope that it will sell to an enthusiast who will continue to use the car as the manufacturer intended, whether that be on a track or merely having an exciting B-road blast on a Sunday morning. Whatever your heart’s desire, this M3 GT will surely deliver.

Exterior

Amongst the invoices you will find three from bodywork experts James Wood in Knaresborough. All dated this year, they show that extensive repairs were carried out and as such the car now presents in excellent condition. Not unexpected given the spend.

We really cannot find much to criticise and rest assured, we do look carefully. Yes, you will find the odd stone chip, most noticeable on the bonnet, and the lower edge of the front spoiler could perhaps do with some paint.

The British Racing Green paintwork has a deep lustre to it, the car now defying its years and considerable mileage.

The smart M double-spoke alloys look oh so smart and signal intent. They look fab from a distance, but up close you will spot some marks. Each is clad with a premium Vredestein Giugiaro tyre. As we always like to point out, matching quality tyres are an excellent indication of careful and considered classic car ownership.

We admire the car’s relatively understated looks, with just the bespoke spoilers and mirrors hinting that this is something special.

Interior

A unique front seat design is the interior’s standout feature. Covered in a mixture of green leather and Alcantara, they not only look great but are extremely comfortable and supportive, essential if the car is to be driven in anger on a track.

Our seller had them restored in 2016, and they still look to be in excellent condition, with just some gentle wear to the driver’s seat and some light creasing to the leather.

Despite the car’s performance remit, the interior is not shorn of desirable features. Air conditioning, a sliding steel sunroof and powered windows perhaps are most noteworthy.

The driving position is superb, with all the major controls falling easily to hand.

Let us also not forget that unlike many coupes, the M3 GT has space for four adults and the boot is a decent size too. Ideal for trips away with friends to Europe’s many racing circuits perhaps?

Mechanical

We always include plenty of photographs of a car’s underside and that is most certainly the case here. There is a little surface corrosion to some of the components, but nothing we can see that would concern us in any way.

Lift the bonnet and that powerful motor is revealed in all its glory. Not unexpectedly, the engine bay is in great condition, the result of care, proper maintenance, and a great deal of expense!

We are told the cars drives superbly, whether on a track or pottering to the shops. The ride is always on the firm side but can be adjusted to suit.

Summary

The sale of this BMW M3 GT offers the discerning enthusiast the chance to acquire one of the most desirable cars from the company’s back catalogue and one with undoubted sporting pedigree.

In the capable ownership of our seller for some 16 years plus, he has lavished it with care and attention rarely seen these days and witnessed by the huge pile of invoices.

A car eminently suitable for continued use as a track day special, where it will undoubtedly acquit itself rather well, outshining far more modern machinery in the process. It will also appeal too as a fast road car, guaranteed to put a smile on your face with each hard-charging mile.

We know this car will attract a huge amount of interest and confidently predict it will sell for between £20,000 and £30,000.
