Background
The E30 M3 was always going to be a hard act to follow. From 1992 to 1999, BMW’s Motorsport division built the second generation of the M3, based of course on the E36. The challenge was to broaden the car’s appeal but without losing the motorsport DNA in the process. We think they succeeded.
However, the clever engineers from the ‘M’ division had another ace up their sleeves and in 1995 they created a more high-performance model, known as the M3 GT. Only 406 were produced, with the UK receiving just 50 cars in right-hand drive. From our research, it would appear the car was built as a homologation model for the FIA GT Series, Division II and the IMSA GT Series…
Under the bonnet sat a suitably modified engine, with power up to 295bhp. The unit is seen by many as a masterpiece in engine building. Let off the leash, the M3 GT was timed at 5.9 seconds for the 0-62mph sprint.
Only one colour was available, British Racing Green, making the car easily identifiable. Bespoke spoilers front and rear along with aerodynamically optimized mirrors and M double-spoke aluminium alloys completed the look.
The M3 GT’s sprint qualities still have the ability to thrill drivers today, that normally aspirated 6-cylinder engine offering a unique driving feel that is missing from the latest generation of performance cars. The lack of electronic driver assistance aids focuses the mind too. Man and machine in perfect harmony perhaps..
