Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ The seminal sporting small saloon of its day, and with fuel injection the ultimate driving machine was born ”

Our guide price represents only a fraction of what it would cost you to restore a 2002tii to the same standard as this, which proves the classic car adage that it is always better let someone else do the heavy lifting.

Background

A BMW 2002 would find a place in many enthusiast’s garages. With a four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a manual gearbox in the classic front-engine/rear-drive configuration, the BMW 2002 is a thoroughbred sports car that can seat four with ease - and in considerable style.

Born out of the need for more power - both Helmut Werner Bönsch, BMW's director of product planning at the time, and Alex von Falkenhausen, the designer of BMW’s M10 engine, modified their 1600-2s by fitting the two-litre engine to their company cars - the 2002 was initially offered in two states of tune: with a single carburettor and 101bhp, and with twin carburettors and 119bhp. The latter is badged as the 2002 ti.

A fuel-injected 2002 made an appearance in 1971, offering easier starting, smoother running, better fuel consumption and 130bhp, which made it something of an all-round win.

And, because the 2002 only weighs a few kilograms over a tonne, performance is spry. The tii, as the fuel-injected car is known, can cover ground at the rate of two miles every minute when it’s running at full chat after passing 60mph in well under ten seconds.

Overview

First registered on the 1st of August 1975, which makes ‘LLJ 361P’ one of the last the German firm built, this BMW 2002tii was supplied to its first owner by New Central Garage of Surrey Ltd.

The subject of a receipted and very expensive bare-metal restoration between 2016 and 2018, it’s finished in Verona Red and still sits on its original alloy wheels.

The seller bought it in 2019 shortly after the work was complete and being a meticulous man, he asked his garage to look at it to make sure everything was as it should be.

They sorted a few minor issues, leaving him free to enjoy owning and driving it for the past six years, including taking it to a couple of local classic car shows.

But, with a garage full of rivals, he’s only covered around 700 miles in all and feels that now is the time to let it go to its next curator.

Exterior

The restoration of the bodywork included new front wings, front and rear repair panels, and lower door skins. These were supplied, along with a vast number of other items, by marque experts Jaymic, so their quality is beyond reproach.

Their fitment is excellent too, and the resulting shutlines speak of many hours of massaging them into the right place. That said, the driver’s door would benefit from being adjusted still further so that its trailing edge sits flush when it is closed, but that’s very firmly in the ‘nice to do’ category.

The paintwork was done with equal diligence, and the Verona Red finish gleams.

Rather than reuse the old stuff that was taken off, new mouldings and rubber seals were fitted when the car was rebuilt. New badges too, and the bumpers were replated.

Of course, the 13-inch OEM alloy wheels were also refurbished, and the result is a show-quality car that needs nothing other than continued love and the odd dollop of polish every now and then.

It also sits on a matching set of 185/70R13 tyres, which were made in 2016 and have plenty of tread left.

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly.

Other nice touches include a pair of Hella spotlamps on the front bumper; the ones the car was fitted with when he bought it were not correct, and the seller couldn’t countenance leaving them on once he realised…

Other fittings include a chrome fog lamp on the rear bumper and a pair of pressed aluminium numberplates; this is not a car that requires much in the way of jewellery.

As for stuff you might like to look at, the black grilles at the front of the car have some stonechips on them, which isn’t a dealbreaker and are only really noticeable because the rest of the BMW is so clean.

The chrome trim on the nearside grille has a small kink in it on its upper edge too, there are circular scratches to the paint below the (slightly cracked) offside front indicator lens, the front bumper is pitted and starting to rust, and there are scratches to the offside front wing in front of the wheel.

As for the paint more generally, the finish to the rear of the nearside front wing and the boot lid isn’t to the same standard as the rest, with bubbles having formed. The seller has been told this is the primer underneath reacting rather than rust and given the condition of the rest of the vehicle, we suspect this is probably an accurate diagnosis.

Interior

The interior reflects BMW positioning the 2002 tii as an upmarket and fast road car, so its qualities are engineered in rather than bolted on.

This means a perfectly tailored driving position, a rather lovely three-spoke steering wheel, instrumentation that is simple but effective, and space for four to travel in comfort, attributes those behind the original Golf GTI would have been very well aware of.

This example has been restored very nicely too, including having the front and rear seats recovered in the correct material. As with every other part of the restoration, there is too much to list here but we’ve photographed all the invoices and they’re available to browse at your leisure.

What we can tell you is that it is a very nice place to be with firm, supportive,  and comfortable seats, plus nice touchpoints at the steering wheel, Alpina gearknob, and pedal rubbers.

What the wood trim is in a very good condition, and its use extends to the dashboard, centre console, and door cards.

The black carpet is very good too, with the driver’s heels only having worn through a small hole. You could retrim, or you could save a few hundred pounds and simply use an overmat, which would hide and protect.

A twin-spindle radio-cassette sits in the dashboard immediately above a single speaker, and what you might lose in hi-fidelity sound you more than make up for in style. Speakers are also fitted in the parcelshelf, and the package even includes a Jimi Hendrix tape for period singalongs.

The boot is nicely presented with good paint and what looks like new floor trim. It also contains a full-size and matching spare alloy wheel, a tool kit, and a jack. Lifting that little lot out also reveals a solid metal floor.

As for flaws, the headlining is believed to be the original, so it is a bit stained and coming loose in places.

Other than that, the only problem we are aware of is that the heater flap is disconnected as the seller is waiting for the correct control cable to be delivered. It can be manually adjusted though, so all is not lost.

Mechanical

The rebuilt engine, which, with only 700-ish miles under its belt is barely run-in, also benefits from an electronic ignition system and an uprated fuel pump.

These are just the highlights though as there is far too much to detail here, so why not make yourself and drink and browse through the paperwork we’ve photographed? Just be sure to leave yourself plenty of time though as there are no fewer than 99 pages to get through…

Given the scale of this investment, it’s no surprise the two-litre, fuel-injected engine fires into life so willingly. Nor that it idles like a Swiss watch, revs like a sewing machine, and makes all the right noises while it is doing it.

The freshly restored engine bay is also a visual delight because it is very clean and beautifully presented, including fresh decals.

There’s also oodles of space under there, something you’ll appreciate every time you service it. Contrast this with the fact that many new BMWs need to have the engine and gearbox removed simply to change the timing chain and you’ll appreciate that not all change is progress.

The underside is painted red too, leaving it open to inspection rather than hidden beneath a thick layer of underseal. From what we can see, it appears to be as well-finished as everywhere else.

We also spotted what looks like a new exhaust, steering, and suspension components too, plus new brake hardware and hoses. Even the undersides of the front and rear valences have been polished and, of course, it all looks utterly solid.

As for faults, what looks like water stains on the radiator header suggest it might be leaking.

History

Despite not needing one, the seller is conscientious enough to have put his BMW through an MoT, a selfless act that resulted in a ticket that’s valid until July 2026.

And, if that weren’t enough, it was issued with no advisories.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear, and it comes with two sets of keys, and the BMW wallet and book pack.

The service book had ten stamps put in it between 1976 and 1981, so it had the very best possible start to life. This money-no-object approach to the car’s curation appears to have been maintained throughout its later life too, as there is a four-page list of restorative work between 2016 and 2018, plus an engine rebuild in 2019.

More recently we spotted a bill for £2,000 for suspension and fuel injection work in 2022, with another hefty bill for shakedown work in 2020.

Summary

Our guide price of between £20,000 and £25,000 represents only a fraction of what it would cost you to restore a 2002tii to the same standard as this, which proves the classic car adage that it is always better to let someone else do the heavy lifting.

Yes, there are a couple of things still to do, but the opportunity to fettle your own car is one of the reasons so many of us enjoying owning a classic; no factory-approved laptop is needed; a set of basic hand tools and a methodical approach should see you through most of the jobs a car like this might throw at you.

And where classic cars also beat their modern brethren is in their residual values; while assured growth is no longer a thing (at least not at the moment) we’d still expect a well-restored sporting icon like this to do better than most.
