Background

The Ur-Quattro (Ur means ‘original’ in German) first reached the market in late 1980 and remained in production throughout what is undoubtedly the greatest decade of the 20th century.

Offering a grown-up alternative to the VW Golf GTI we all lusted after and drove if we could afford one, the Audi’s 2144cc engine pushed its 200bhp to all four corners via its innovative permanent four-wheel-drive system, a piece of leftfield thinking that was dubbed ‘quattro’ in a flash of marketing genius.

Mounted longitudinally, the five-cylinder engine was fitted with a turbocharger and an intercooler, a move that at least partly contributed to marketing engi-nerds the world over adding the ‘turbo’ moniker to anything they wanted to imbue with feelings of power and exclusivity.
As is the way of the world, the Quattro gained capacity and power over the years; first bored out to 2226cc (which gave the same power and torque output but at lower revs) a later 20v DOHC version gave more power and a little extra on the top speed.

The three engine variants were given individual codes, and these are how enthusiasts now refer to them: the original 2144cc 10v engine was ‘WR’, followed by the 2226cc 10v ‘MB’, and the 2226 20v ‘RR’.

But the Quattro was never about outright power; designed to be driven in the sort of adverse conditions that German skiers and world rally champions tended to find themselves in, traction and handling were far more important than sheer grunt. The Mini had proved the advantage of never having to lift for corners and the Quattro emulated this by channelling twice the Mini’s power on snow, ice, gravel and other loose surfaces.

And it worked better than Audi could have ever hoped. From the early ‘80s through to the end of the Group B era, Quattro variants won 23 World Rally Championships in the hands of legends such as Michèle Mouton, Hannu Mikkola, Walter Rӧrhl, and Stig Blomqvist. The final tally included two outright world championships and another two as runners-up.

Nearly 11,500 road-going Quattros were produced by the time it died in 1991.

Allow us to introduce you to a 17k mile-from-new, time warp 10v example with a full Audi service history. Such is its condition and provenance that we think that it is surely one of the best and lowest mileage Ur-Quattros in the country…

Overview

“I remember driving past a showroom on a dual carriageway in my Audi 100 Quattro Estate and seeing this car sitting in the centre of the window, surrounded by brand new BMWs,” recalls vendor, Ralph Webster. “It looked fantastic, so I turned around immediately and walked past a sales team astounded that I had no interest in their brand-new BMWs”.

The rest as they say, is history. Cue 35 years of fastidious ownership. “It’s had no restoration of any kind done. The 17k mileage is genuine and it’s arguably in better condition now than when I purchased it all those years ago. The only works it has required are servicing, replacement tyres (the old ones were showing signs of cracking), a new stainless steel exhaust system and a replacement fuel pump; other than that, it’s all original and remains in showroom condition”.

Ralph had the sub-frames powder coated back in 1989 and treated with Waxoyl; the body cavities were also injected with the latter with 4 litres in total applied. This has he feels, served the car well. “There’s no rust at all. As the MOT mileages show, I’ve only ever used it on the odd occasion. It’s never been accident damaged and has always been garaged”.

The Quattro benefits from both a recent full service by an Audi specialist and a professionally applied ceramic coating (by Getechniq). It also has a new MOT ticket, having passed last week with no advisories. “Every mechanic who has had anything to do with this car thinks it is pure magic!

“I drove her 12 miles to the MOT test station and back, then 30 miles to the ceramic coaters and back. She performed perfectly and left our 258bhp Discovery 5 for dust. The Quattro feels light on the wheel and corners remarkably well. I have never abused the car as I own a 500bhp E55 Mercedes-Benz if I ever felt the need to scare myself”.

Having decided to sell the family business, Ralph and his family are now moving into the local village. Sadly, that has seen his available garaging significantly downsized and means he can no longer keep all of his toys. “The Quattro has to go! Anyone want a 1951 Bentley Special?”

Exterior

As we alluded to in our Vehicle Overview section above, the Quattro is fresh from a visit to a detailer where it received that ceramic coating. “They stated that the exterior is perfect,” says Ralph.

Well, if it wasn’t before then it certainly is now. What you get is the model’s box-tastic lines in showroom perfect condition. The red paintwork is immaculate; decals are pin sharp; alloy wheels without blemish; stainless steel exhaust system gleaming; light lenses free from deterioration; window glasses absolutely clear…

We could go on and on and on and…

It has two minor modifications from standard and these are the red door mirrors and red wheel edgings. Ralph does admit to one minor mishap, which was rectified painlessly by a body shop: “30 years or so ago I had the bonnet re-sprayed by a Porsche specialist after I stupidly buffed off a small spot of topcoat when polishing it. The bonnet wasn’t removed, with the work done in-situ”. As you can see from our photographs, it matched the colour perfectly.

The Quattro’s exterior is pretty much flawless.

Interior

How would you expect a 17k mile, beautifully maintained car’s cabin to present? Perhaps with unmarked carpets and door cards, uber lightly patinated seats and an unmarked headlining…

Well, that’s all here. As is a majestic fully functioning digital dashboard, original Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46 Stereo Radio Cassette system. The steering wheel, gearstick, centre column and dashboard all remain almost entirely mark-free.

In the boot you will find the original spare wheel and again, immaculate presentation.

We’ve used the word time warp several times in this listing already and that applies here, and in spades. It is like stepping wondrously back into the Eighties.

Fire up the Quattro!

Mechanical

As Ralph stated above, the Audi drives absolutely spot on. It has received any mechanical or servicing works when required, and benefits from several additions including the Roger Galvin fitted stainless steel exhaust (£495 back in 2014).

It has recently received a full service by the only Audi specialist in the vendor’s area. “He was to replace the timing belt as it has been on for about 5 years but his tool either failed or broke, so a new timing belt is in the boot with a new idler pulley”.

Popping the bonnet reveals an engine bay every bit as good as the rest of the car and it’s the same story underneath, where you will find the original stone-chip in place. It has been topped up with fresh underseal where one or two cracks have appeared over the years, to ensure it remains well protected.

Our Video Review demonstrates all aspects of this car’s undoubted quality, as well as allowing you hear the Quattro’s straight five-cylinder engine fire up. Under throttle, the stainless-steel exhaust elicits a lovely rasp too.

History

The Audi comes with all its original service and handbooks with the former being the most important in the car’s history file. Within it you will find the following service stamps:

•    Delivery Inspection, 05/01/88 – Audi/VW Specialist Cars, Aberdeen

•    After 1,000 miles, 18/03/88 – Audi/VW Specialist Cars, Aberdeen

•    6,842 miles, 18/06/88 – Audi/VW Specialist Cars, Aberdeen

•    8,888 miles, 26/10/89 – Audi/VW Specialist Cars, Aberdeen

•    11,940 miles, 03/05/90 – V.A.G. Cameron Motors, Perth

•    15,323 miles, 19/02/91 – V.A.G. Cameron Motors, Perth

•    16,247 miles, 25/02/94 – V.A.G. Cameron Motors, Perth

The next most important document is a typed one from Ralph himself that sheds some light on the car’s history and states: “… it had been in John Clark’s new Audi Dealership’s showroom for the first year of life until word got out that the 20V was coming. She was then sold but returned to market. I purchased her in 1989 from the BMW showroom in Dundee with 8000 miles on the clock”.

It also notes MOT tests that have taken place since 1991 and notes some of the works (sub-frames, exhaust system) and minor modifications from standard (red door mirrors and red wheel edgings).

You will also find several invoices for the minimal amount of work that the car has required to be carried out on it over the years. As such, it’s worth taking your time to electronically flick your way through the documentation section in our photo gallery.

You will also find the expired MOT test certificates, as well as the car’s V5c Registration Document and its current MOT certificate. Finally, a period Car Stereo Cassette Cleaner in close to brand new condition and several spares (including that new timing belt) are also included.

The seller has asked us to point out that he often worked for long periods of time overseas and during this time the car was on a Sorn and remained garaged, and so the MoT's may not necessarily run as expected.

The clutch master and slave units have also been changed out with original parts supplied by AM Cars.

Summary

Wow – what a car.

Purchased, enjoyed lightly and fastidiously maintained, this is surely one of the finest remaining examples of a 10-valve Ur Audi Quattro Turbo MB.

Be in no doubt, opportunities like this come along very rarely so if you’re in the market for a superlatively original car then this is your chance. This Quattro will slot immediately into any high-class collection and undoubtedly hold its own. Equally, if you’re a one-man (or woman) type of a classic car person then it will provide a stunning garage queen; one to be driven on high days and holidays, taken to shows and simply enjoyed.

Given its wonderful original condition, immaculate provenance and the fact it has been freshly serviced/MOT'd and ceramic coated, we’ll state it again: this is surely one of the best remaining 10v examples in existence.

We are happy to offer this car for auction with an estimate in the range of £67,000 - £72,000.
