Paul's review

Paul Hegarty - Consignment Specialist Message Paul

“ A manual gearbox 'drivers' car, with full performance upgrades. I think it's the most exceptional TT we have offered for sale. ”

Silver leather 'pole position' Recaro seats, steering wheel, gear lever, grab handles and door cards.

Background

First launched in 1998, it might be hard to believe but the Bauhaus-inspired first-generation Audi TT is now a bona fide modern classic. Time flies, huh?

Built until 2006, the MKI/Type 8N cars might share the PQ34 chassis with cars as commonplace as the VW Golf, Skoda Octavia and the Audi A3 but the coachwork - designed in California and named after the NSU’s historical success at the Isle of Man races - is a world apart from one of those pedestrian shopping hatchbacks being lithe and agile and snake-hipped in a way that the bloated carp that masquerade as sportscars these days can never hope to be.

Offered as a two-seat convertible or a 2+2 coupé, the TT was offered with either the four-wheel-drive Quattro chassis or in a straightforward front-wheel-drive configuration.

A series of high-speed accidents forced Audi to recall cars in late 1999/early 2000 to help improve the car’s high-speed stability: a boot spoiler plus Audi’s Electronic Stability Programme and Anti-Slip Regulation cured the problem and were carried forward on subsequent models.

Engines ranged from a turbocharged 1.8-litre, five-valve, inline-four that develops 178bhp or 222bhp depending on the state of tune all the way to the 3.2-litre VR6 with 247bhp that arrived in early 2003, as did a new six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

Overview

This 2004 Audi TT Quattro convertible is finished in Misano Red (LZ3M) with a black folding roof and a Silk Nappa (trim code N1U/JX) leather interior.

With a full year’s MoT, 46,000 miles on the clock, and just four previous keepers, it’s been in the seller’s care since June 2023.

It’s fitted with the full-fat 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine and six-speed gearbox, giving the driver access to a top speed of 147mph after flying past 62mph in 6.7 seconds thanks to a whopping 225bhp and 207lb.ft of torque.

Exterior

Finished in Misano Red, the TT presents very well indeed – but then with fewer than 50,000 miles under its belt, that’s pretty much what you’d expect, isn’t it?

The shade suits the convertible’s cheery nature because this is TT comes from a place in time before Audi started taking itself quite so seriously. The original TT revelled in providing accessible performance in a fun package; a sort of upmarket Beetle, if you will, so a vibrant shade like this is exactly right.

Red polishes up well, too and is easy to match if there’s a problem later. All-in-all, we couldn’t ask for more as the underlying panels are as good as the paintwork being straight and true and beautifully aligned.

The folding black hood is also in good shape. It furls and unfurls as it should, sealing tautly and fitting beautifully. It’s got a proper glass rear screen as well, which is heated.

Of course, it’s free of rips, tears and other damage - but then you’d guessed that by now, hadn’t you?

The nine-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels are not only in a decent condition but they’re also fitted with a fine set of Continental Conti Sport Contact tyres.

We will never get tired of telling you that experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you a shortcut into their attitude towards maintenance.

The headlamps are clear, the light lenses undamaged, the windscreen is free of chips, and the glazing is good. Problems, therefore, are few.

The edge of the driver’s door has a few small scuffs, there are a few usual stone chips to the front end and lower areas, a small mark to the center of the driver's door and a scratch under the handle, and a few very light scratches in places but nothing that shouldn't be remedied with a talented detailer.

Interior

The Silk Nappa leather interior is rare. With heavily sculpted Recaro seats and a matching steering wheel, it’s funky and sporty and very of-the-period.

It’s in good shape, too. Sure, the seats have some minor creasing and light colour loss here and there but their overall condition is very good – and they grip like an angry anaconda yet are as supportive and soothing as a reply from Dear Deirdre.

The rest of the cabin is a delight; the early TTs are incredibly stylish and have some lovely features like the pass-through centre console, stubby gear lever and knob, and twin rollover hoops.

The door cards, with their funky door pulls and Silk Nappa inserts, are in a great condition and even the netting door pockets are firm and taut!

The carpets are good and they’re protected by heavy duty rubber mats.

The boot is as good as everywhere else. Lifting the carpets shows nothing but a solid and rust-free floor, and the space saver spare wheel contains an insert with the tool kit. An indoor car cover is also provided.

All electrical buttons and switches appear to work as they should.

Not much, in other words.

Mechanical

The TT’s service history is recorded as follows:

  • 30.06.2006 and 17,230 miles – service by Smith Knight Fay of Bolton
  • 11.12.2008 and 23,590 miles – service by Aspull Motor Vehicles of Wigan
  • 12.08.2011 and 31,964 miles – service by Aspull Motor Vehicles of Wigan

  • 03.04.2024 and 45,987 miles - service by EV Tech + MOT LTD
  • 23.03.2026 and 46,843 miles - service by Formula One Autocentres

The under bonnet area is very clean and tidy.

As you can see in the video, it starts well, idles and revs as it should, and, while the emphasis is on efficiency rather than aural seduction, it does have a decent exhaust note, which you’ll be able to enjoy when you’re in al fresco mode.

The underside looks good and no MoT tester has ever had cause to mention structural corrosion to the body or floor.

History

The Audi passed an MoT in the middle of March this year and did so with no advisories, something it’s no stranger to, which speaks volumes as to its curation.

Speaking of which, the TT’s history file comes with a wad of expired MoT certificates plus some old invoices, the stamped service history booklet and the book pack.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear and it comes with two key fobs comprising both the black and the red ones.

Summary

With 225bhp, four-wheel-drive, and one of the best folding hoods in the business, this TT could streak to your skiing holiday in the Swiss mountains before detouring back to Blighty via a few spirited laps of the Nürburgring.

As a well-maintained and beautifully presented example of a modern classic, it should also hold its value better than most cars of its age - and, given our guide price is only between £11,000 and £14,000, it’s not like you’ll be betting the house on it, either.
