Luxurious on the inside and strikingly good-looking on the outside, the Aston Martin V8 is a car that has been on nearly everyone's wish list. Time to check that box with this one?

Background

Back in the early 70s, the Aston Martin V8 was launched as a facelift to the DBS, which was a wonderful car in its own right. The Aston Martin V8 stayed on sale from 1972 to 1989, alongside the more focused V8 Vantage, which joined the line up from the late 70s. The car was subjected to a number of revisions, some of which coincided with the introduction of a new owner for the marque. As a car company, Aston Martin did go through a lot during those times, but what stayed largely constant was the well-engineered, great-looking car that was the Aston Martin V8.

Overview

Listed with us at Cars Online | Bonhams is a pre-Oscar-India spec Aston Martin V8. Manufactured in December 1976, this example comes with a variety of original paperwork and matching numbers. The overall condition is a mix of a largely damage-free bodywork and fairly clean, if a little worn-out, interior. While it's far from how an ideal Aston Martin V8 would look, it doesn't appear to be too difficult to be brought back to its original, shiny state.

Exterior

Aston Martin commissioned the DBS' designer William Towns the mammoth task of improving the original. What may seem like a mere facelift has in turn transformed the way the car looks in the Aston Martin V8 form. The DBS was a pretty spectacular looking one to start with, but the distinct dual headlamps and prominent hood bump make this one look even better. In fact, if sporty was what you were after, the Aston Martin V8 would have our vote too.

This 1977 Aston Martin V8 looks to be damage-free on the outside, except for cracks on the windshield and rear window. The wheels require some attention if they were brought back to a more presentable state whereas there are clear signs that the car has been repainted at some point. There are some signs of surface corrosion on the chrome bumpers, while some of the trim appears to be missing; for example, the chrome surround for the rear windshield.

Interior

The Aston Martin V8 was positioned as a high-performance GT car, so the interior had to match — and it did! The DBS and the early examples of the Aston Martin V8 came with an all-black interior. In terms of the dashboard design, it's quite an impressive-looking thing. As the mix of leather and wood exudes luxury, the rather slim, nicely angled steering wheel clearly shows that the car was made keeping the driver in mind. The interior of the 1977 example looks to be in decent condition, with only some wear visible. Everything, from the roof to the door cards, looks good.

Mechanical

The Aston Martin V8 was brought out as a follow-up to the DBS V8 with some improvements, better noise insulation, and more muscular — if not entirely different — styling. Powering the car was a Tadek-Marek-designed 5340 cc V8 engine which could be optioned with a Chrysler-sourced automatic gearbox. All of it is hidden under the nice, clean aluminum bodywork! There's some rust visible on the inside of the hood, but the engine bay otherwise looks clean. As we mentioned earlier, it has matching numbers, which is always a bonus.

History

The Aston Martin V8 was launched in 1972 and continued to receive updates throughout its line with production ending in 1989. There was also a more focused V8 Vantage, a convertible V8 Volante, and even Zagato iterations of the car. This example here was manufactured in 1976 as a model-year-1977 car.

Summary

The Aston Martin V8 represents a great approachable classic Aston Martin backed by solid internals, arresting looks, and commendable driving. A fairly sonorous V8 powering it makes the deal even sweeter.
