“ Probably the best Discovery Land Rover made and this one has only covered 7,500 miles in the careful hands of one owner. Its the best one I have seen! ”

Many think the late-model Discovery 4 is the best vehicle Land Rover built in recent years, largely because the high-tech solutions the firm adopted actually made the vehicle more effective; they were specified by engineers, not marketeers.

Background

Unveiled in 2009, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that the Discovery 4 replaced the Disco 3.

It started life with a 2.7-litre engine, which was replaced in 2011 by the three-litre TDV6 and SDV6. An eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox became standard fitment in 2012, and a midlife refresh was unveiled in 2013.

The facelift, which you see on this example, ushered in Land Rover’s new design language. First seen on the 2010 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, it is rounder and softer than earlier models, while simultaneously bringing a more luxurious cabin and substantial mechanical improvements.

Overview

Still in the hands of its first owner, ‘OE14 GFG’ is an Aintree Green Land Rover Discovery 4 that’s still showing fewer than 8,000 miles on the odometer.

It’s seen only sparing and careful use in the dozen years since he collected it from Ridgeway Land Rover in Oxford, and has always been kept immaculately clean and garaged.

Still presenting like a brand-new example, the SDV6 three-litre turbocharged diesel offers 252bhp alongside almost unparallelled luxury for every member of your larger-than-average family.

This is an unrepeatable opportunity to buy what is probably the best remaining example of the finest Discovery Land Rover ever built.

Exterior

Imagine visiting a Land Rover dealer in late 2014: Your budget won’t quite stretch to a new Discovery but they’ve got a lightly used example sitting on the forecourt; freshly valeted and showing a modest mileage, you snap it up because it’s almost indistinguishable from new.

Fast-forward to 2026 and you can now enjoy exactly the same emotions because this June 2014 example is on the button and almost flawless.

That means straight, ripple-free flanks. Dent and dink-free wings and doors. Unscuffed corners. Unscratched glazing too, and chip and crack-free lamp lenses – not to mention bright and shiny badges.

The sunroof glides open at the touch of a button, and seals tightly and evenly in its aperture when it’s closed.

It also still wears its original dealer-fit numberplates.

Even the tyres, which are fitted to flawless alloy wheels, are the original 255/55R19 Goodyear Wrangler HP M&S jobbies from 2014.

Make an appointment to come and poke and pry but you’ll still struggle to find a flaw: It’s so clean it’s the Uncanny Valley of 21st Century 4x4s.

You’d struggle to find a better colour than Aintree Green, either. As classless as it is classy, it’ll lope effortlessly from a mountaintop to Glyndebourne – and it’ll do it with six of your closest friends or family – and five of them can hide behind subtly tinted windows.

There is a flaw, but that amounts to nothing more serious than a few light scratches to the nearside door mirror.

Interior

The front seats, which are heated and electrically adjustable, are every bit as comfortable as they look. Trimmed with butter-soft leather and still virtually unmarked, they also benefit from an armrest on both sides, something that goes hand-in-hand with the commanding driving position.

Imperious only hints at how special the lofty driving position makes you feel.

The two outer middle seats are also heated, while all three have proper three-point seatbelts and headrests. As indeed, do the two rearmost seats; few cars can carry six of the people most precious to you in more safety.

Naturally, the rearmost seats fold down flat to give you an enormous boot – and if load-carrying is that day’s priority then the centre seats also fold down and out of sight, giving you access to the most luxurious hold this side of the Queen Mary.

All are virtually unmarked and all are trimmed in the same soft hide as the seats in the front.

But then this is a very luxurious cabin, and it is stuffed to the gunnels with the luxuries we’ve all come to rely on including air-conditioning, electric doors, windows, and mirrors, Meridian speakers for the comprehensive infotainment system, and external cameras that make off-roading and parking a doddle.

Plus, of course, a full suite of controls for the sophisticated off-road chassis.

The luxurious carpets are protected by both fabric and rubber mats, a duality that goes to the heart of how well the Discovery 4 balances the competing demands of two and country. Naturally, all are in a very good condition.

But then everything is in a very good condition, and the seller’s son, who’s managing the sale on behalf of his father, assures us that everything works as it should.

But that won’t come as a surprise by now, will it?

Mechanical

Despite its low mileage, the Discovery has been serviced six times, which makes a refreshing change as so many owners think that covering a few miles each years means they can stretch their service intervals to a decade or more.

The turbo-diesel starts almost imperceptibly and revs with uncanny civility. There’s barely a murmur from the exhaust system either; this is not a car that feels the need to shout.

The engine bay is, of course, as impeccably preserved and presented as everything else.

Moving underneath, even the sidestep brackets, which ALWAYS rot away, are in a better-than-average condition and the underslung spare wheel is in good shape.

That said, there is some surface rust under there so a day spent with a wire brush followed by a rust-killer and something like Lanoguard would fend off future problems.

As for faults, the only one we know about is a low battery warning message, which is incredibly common on modern vehicles as they draw a significant current even when they’re turned off. So, while it might mean a new battery is needed, it’s more likely to be nothing that keeping it on a battery conditioner won’t cure.

History

The Discovery’s MoT is valid until June 2026, and it probably won’t surprise you to learn that if you were to whisper the word “advisory”, neither it nor its owner would have the slightest clue what you were talking about.

The recent Vehicle History Check is also clear, and it comes with two remote key fobs.

The V5 Registration Certificate shows no previous keepers, the Land Rover wallet contains the full book pack, and the attached printout shows the following services have been carried out:

  • 20.07.2022 and 6,294 miles – service by MID Engineering
  • 14.01.2021 and 5,354 miles – service by MID Engineering
  • 22.07.2019 and 4,288 miles – service by MID Engineering
  • 16.06.2018 and 3,809 miles – service by Marshall Land Rover
  • 16.06.2017 and 2,795 miles – service by Marshall Land Rover
  • 23.09.2015 and 1,469 miles – service by Ridgeway Land Rover
  • 23.06.2014 – pre-delivery inspection by Ridgeway Land Rover

Marshall Land Rover also completed a health check in June 2024 and, unsurprisingly, the only colour on the sheets is green.

Summary

Many think the late-model Discovery 4 is the best vehicle Land Rover built in recent years, largely because the high-tech solutions the firm adopted actually made the vehicle more effective; they were specified by engineers, not marketeers.

But this only applies if you buy the right example.

Like this one: An unbelievable find and surely a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity, this Land Rover Discovery 4 is as close to being a brand-new example as you’ll ever see.

So it won’t be cheap.

Or will it?

Because the price of a new Discovery starts at £60,000 – and that’s for a vehicle that What Car? magazine condemned by writing “With a fault rate of 40%, it doesn't stack up against all of the alternatives”.

Which means this, the ultimate Discovery, could be seen as something of a bargain; we suspect the dust will settle somewhere between £30,000 and £35,000, which would be fine value for a 4x4 that could be the very last vehicle you’ll ever need to buy.

Do we need to remind you that it can tow 3.5 tonnes thanks to a whopping 442lb.ft of torque, sit on the motorway at three-figure speeds all day, crack the 0-62mph sprint in 9.3 seconds, return 30mpg in everyday use, seat seven in luxury, provide battle-tank protection, and conquer the Eiger before breakfast?

Versatile doesn’t even begin to cover it.
