Adam's review

Adam Rose - Consignment Specialist Message Adam

“ A lovely example, with the wheels recently refurbished too. ”

If you want fast and furious and fragile, buy Italian – but if you want unruffled reliability with a wonderfully rorty exhaust note then the Lexus SC430 is probably even more sensible than the Mercedes-Benz SL you’ve been considering.

Background

The Lexus SC430, also known as the Toyota Soarer, was in production between 2001 and 2010. Featuring a clever folding aluminium roof, the SC430 we’re offering here is powered by a 4.3-litre V8 engine that offers 300bhp and 325lb.ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic gearbox.

Performance is brisk with 62mph arriving in 6.4 seconds on its way to an artificially limited top speed of 155mph, the performance being blunted somewhat by the car’s 1,742kg weight.

The design is said to have been inspired by the architecture, lifestyle and harbours of the Côte d'Azur, which will have made for a nice tax-deductible holiday for the design team if nothing else.

That retractable aluminium hard-top is clever though, offering every single one of the benefits a full-blown convertible offers along with the grace, weather-sealing, and security benefits of a coupé – and while it takes 25 seconds to do its thing, it moves with such balletic grace you’ll find yourself wishing it took even longer simply to give you even more time appreciate how clever the Lexus engineers are.

So clever, in fact, that J.D. Power awarded it top spot for reliability in 2003 and 2004.

Overview

Finished in Champagne Metallic with a Cream leather interior, this 2004 Lexus SC430 has been impeccably serviced, receiving routine maintenance no fewer than 15 times in its 20-year life, despite only having covered 53,500 miles.

In the previous keeper’s care from 2016 through to October 2025 when our seller bought as a retirement present for himself, he’s reluctantly concluded this isn’t the classic for him – and before you wonder about any dark secrets it might be harbouring, it isn’t for him simply because it’s too reliable.

Like so many of us, he enjoys fettling as much as he does driving, and given the Lexus’s stellar reputation for reliability, he hasn’t found anything to fiddle with.

So, he bought himself a Triumph Vitesse from us last week, dropping the Japanese car off when he collected the Brit.

Exterior

The Lexus’s coachwork is in a stunning condition with largely unsullied panels and a flawless sheen to the Champagne Metallic (paint code 4Q8) finish, whose subtle flecks glisten in the spring sunshine.

The shutlines uphold the Japanese firm’s reputation for quality control and engineering excellence too, and the four corners are free of the scuffs and scrapes that betray a park-by-feel driver.

The freshly refurbished alloy wheels would benefit from having the (included) replacement centre caps fitted but the rest is very good indeed, including the tyres which are 245/40R18 Pirellis all round, albeit three Cinturato P7s from 2018/19 and one Pirelli Powergy from 2025.

As the video demonstrates the roof furls with the same balletic ease and speed it’s always done; it’s a very clever system that genuinely gives you the best of both worlds.

Other things that caught our eye include the colour-coordinated retractable aerial on the offside rear wing, and the clean apertures with their good rubber seals.

As for flaws, apart from the usual and inevitable age-related marks every car collects over the years, the offside headlamp has gone very slightly cloudy, the offside rear lamp has some polishing marks on it, the edge of the driver’s door has a few chips, some of the black window trim has discoloured, the offside front wing has a tiny dink, and there are moderately heavy scuffs under the rear valence.

That’s about it though because everything else, including the rest of the lamp lenses and the badges, is in a startlingly good condition and is unlikely to need anything more than continued love and polishing.

Interior

More of a 2+2 than a full four-seater, the cabin is light and airy thanks to the combination of pale cream leather and bird’s eye maple veneer.

But then Lexus does not mess around, even taking the time to visit the Yamaha musical instrument factory to learn more about timber moulding techniques to avoid the plasticky looking veneer some of its rivals used at the time.

Sleek metal trim helps the firm avoid any accusations of clinging to the previous century, and the result is as elegant as it is durable.

Lexus also enrolled the skills of Mark Levinson of Connecticut to design the audio system, whose radio, cassette-player, DVD-player, and six-CD multichanger are channelled to nine custom-designed speakers via a 440W amplifier.

The result is loud enough to make your eardrums bleed while retaining the sort of high-quality audio that makes audiophiles go weak at the knees.

The screen is also hidden behind a wooden door, so even turning it on is a small moment of theatre. The entire thing can be controlled from the steering wheel and, obviously, it works as well now as it did when it was first installed.

The air-conditioning system is so intelligent that it knows to divert hot air to the footwells when the roof is down on a cold day, and the algorithm is even said to account for the wind chill factor.

Lexus does not mess around, and the SC430 is cleverer than most of the people you will meet today.

The front seats have survived the passage of more than two decades with impressive aplomb, with only a few lights wrinkles to the driver’s seat hinting at their age.

The rear seats are as plump and firm as a newly plucked peach, and smaller details like the leather seatbelt retaining straps and the pop-up front cupholders that keep them hidden until they’re needed, further demonstrate the attention to detail that went into designing and building it.

The headlining is clean and free of damage, the controls and instruments are still bright and easily read, and everything works as it should including the glass air diffuser that rises up from behind the rear seat to help keep your hair unruffled at speed.

The boot is as well-preserved as everything else. The tool kit, of course, still looks brand new but then this is a Lexus.

In fact, the only flaws are a slightly damaged netting pocket in the front passenger footwell, light wear to the front armrest, and very light staining to the carpet in the driver’s footwell.

The only job the seller has had to do is to reset the TPMS; as we mentioned in the introduction, the SC430’s reliability has actually worked against it on this occasion…

Because, while the 4.3-litre, 32-valve DOHC VVT-i Power V8 engine might be a bit of a mouthful, it develops a whopping 300bhp and does so with the precision and reliability of a Swiss watch thanks to a winning combination of Japanese engineering and above-average curation.

That curation has clearly been extended to maintaining its cosmetic condition too as the engine bay is as flawless as you’ll find on a car that’s old enough to drink in any American state.

However, some surface corrosion has broken out underneath but this looks like it’s still cosmetic at the moment, giving you plenty of time before it turns into a more expensive problem. Certainly no MoT tester has ever questioned the Lexus’s structural integrity, or even raised it as an advisory. We have also noticed whilst manoeuvring the car around our premises that there is a noticeable ‘creaking’ sound coming from either the front right suspension or the steering.

History

In fact, the Lexus’ MoT, which is valid until September 2026, was issued with no advisories, just like every single one since 2020.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear, and it comes with two keys.

The history file includes the Lexus wallet and book pack as well as plenty of expired MoT certificates and invoices.

Please note that the registration of ‘AP03 DKP’, which you will see on some of the paperwork, has now reverted to ‘MD53 VPV’.

Summary

Clarkson hated it but then given he’s turned into a parody of himself with some questionable attitudes towards, well, just about everything, some, maybe even most, will see owning one as a badge of honour.

If you want fast and furious and fragile, buy Italian – but if you want unruffled reliability with a wonderfully rorty exhaust note then the Lexus SC430 is probably even more sensible than the Mercedes-Benz SL you’ve been considering.

Better yet, our guide price is a ridiculously reasonable £7,000 to £10,000 but as it’s being offered with no reserve, it’ll be going to a new home once the very first bid has been placed.
